Hr. 3: Civil and Effective Texts: Analyzing Rhetoric in Articles, Speeches, Videos, Ads by Suzi

Make a post with your name below with an example of a text you see as civil and effective. Provide a link, description/context of the text (consider the elements of SPACECAT), and explanation of why you see the text as civil and/or effective. Once we have multiple posts available here, make two comments on the posts of fellow students, politely letting them know if you agree or disagree with them and explaining the reasons why.

This ad is very effective; the speaker is trying to communicate between ethos and pathos to appeal to the true facts of vaping and to the physical health problems it can create for teens brains, heart, and lungs. It gives you disturbing imagery of parasites running through the human teenage body that begins to dig through the organs to where it's visible on the skin during the ad. They are trying to show viewers the true reality of what vaping can do to the body and how it is a true epidemic.

I think this ad is effective, they use the popularity of Pete Davidson to draw in viewers. It also uses comedy to draw in the viewer. It is almost like watching a skit so you subconsciously are being advertised to. It appeals to ethos the most but in an unusual way. They are almost using the fact that Pete has made bad decisions to gain the viewers trust. Now that he is trying to make better decisions he is coming from a place of experience also appeals to ethos. The way they incorporated aspects from his real life, like the tattoo removal makes it more realistic and feel less like an ad.

Catchy song? Yes. Good message? Yes. While it can maybe be a little inappropriate for younger viewers, it really does spread a lot of awareness about Train safety. I don't like when ads use animals in their ad, but their product has nothing to with animals, like car commercials. The futuristic look makes it seem wealthy and like they are good at their job.

Speaker: Gorilla Glue Company

Purpose: To market their product and explain its utility to the audience.

Audience: Tv viewers who might be interested in the product.

Context: Aired during Halloween. The gorilla is a recurring character in every gorilla glue ad.

Exigence: Halloween coming around. They wanted to sell more products.

Choices: To make the Gorilla appear and help the murderer as if it's a good thing. Having the characters drop what they're doing to fix the broken ax.

Appeals: Pathos because it mostly uses humor to endear the audience to the brand. You could argue that they're using logos by showcasing how well it "fixed" the ax but that's not very fact-driven and its still just using humor. You might even be able to say there's a small amount of ethos because the gorilla is presented as some sort of irrefutable force of nature.

Tone: It's very whimsical. Almost surreal with how ridiculous it is.

I think the ad is effective because it balances whimsical wacky humor with showing off the products uses. A lot of ads that use humor like this fall into the pitfall of having the comedy be completely unrelated to the product at hand but this one fixes that by having the glue play a central role in the plot. The gorilla is a great way to make the appearance of the product itself be funny since its appearance is always associated with the appearance of a gorilla out of nowhere (and gorillas that come out of nowhere are very funny). They even subvert the normal gorilla glue formula for people who are already familiar with the ads by having the gorilla aid the ax murderer.

As a pillow or a pet. It also gives a really nice catchphrase/song which goes. “It’s a pillow. It’s a pet. It’s a pillow pet.” Something that gets stuck in your head. Of course they use ethos by showing other kids in the add to be seemingly happy. And as a kid other kids a lot of times get automatic ethos. So kids see how amazing it is and that you can trust the validity of how soft it is. And they use logos by showing every place you can take it to. Not to mention how they show all the different types of animals. This was one of my favorite ads as a kid.

It’s is effective because it shows the product all the way through the ad, shows humans from a cute dogs perspective and has a feel good/ upbeat vibe. The actual product was successfully sold among lots because of the cokes being individualised with actual names along with relationship titles. This would compel the consumer to buy a coke with their name, their friends name, or relation on the front of it. For more unique names or titles, there is even a way to order your own custom coke with anything written on it. That way you can target the cokes to all age groups and other categories.

This ad is showing a sugar free lollipop made by the company chupa chups and it's giving you a visual example of one of the benefits of eating sugar free candy in a simple way. I think this ad refers to logos because it shows you what you should be doing/eating without forcing it on you. This can be shown to people who aren't health-conscious as well because anybody can eat sugar free lollipops and obviously the purpose of making this ad was to show that it's the better option to go with in total.

M&M is an established candy company, and they don't need exotic advertisements for people to purchase their product anymore. I like how they used the opportunity to use a civil, and coming together concept as each person apologizes to one another after a year like this especially. This is the type of commercial people will remember, as I said, "remember that M&M commercial Dan Levy was in".

So this was an ad about texting and driving that was aired on a local new station to show how dangerous texting and driving can be, at the end they show the dramatic results of texting and driving. The way they statged the accident at the end of the ad was to make sure that it is no joke to text and drive and how how violent it can be. They chose a younger person that was texting (But i feel like that is misleading because there is a wide variety of people who text and drive from 16-65). It heavily leans on pathos to get their message across by showing the people in the accident before it happened and creating this relationship between the two people before the crash. (Here i should mention that basically right before the crash time pauses and the older woman teaches the younger girl responsible driving skills.)
Yea so basically its effective by showing people how to avoid this terrible accident that happens but it still shows what happened so people keep that imagine in mind when they think about texting while driving.
