It was roughly over a month since Julia and Winston had meet with O’Brien at his house. Winston had been reading the book O'Brien gave him written by Emmanuel Goldstein during this time and didn’t get a chance to finish it. Winston has this thought right before the hidden telescreen in the room speaks for the first time, telling Julia and Winston the they have been caught. Julia and Winston were discussing the time when they say the thrush singing in the woods. Winston notes that the birds sing, the proles sing, but the Party never sings. The Party had made a race that expresses no emotion and no hope for a better future, and this is when Winston has his epiphany. 

 Winston is a part of the Outer Party and has identified himself as dead along with his fellow party members. The people of the Party have been completely brainwashed and even the few like Winston and Julia know they can never successfully run a revolution against the power of the Inner Party. When Winston describes the poles and birds as having the freedom to sing earlier in this passage, he is making the connection that hope lies in them. The proles possess freedom that gives them the potential to make significant change against the chains of bondage the Inner Party holds. When Winston says, “theirs was the future,” he is referring to the Proles and people outside the Party if they exist. This is the first time Winston realizes he cannot make change during his lifetime. He then states that the only way he can truly contribute to the downfall of the Party is to pass along his knowledge of reality. Winston does not hold the position to revolt physically, but he has the power to revolt physiologically. Winston has recognized that his greatest weapon is not his body, but his mind, and he must do all he can to keep it alive like a person keeps themselves from physical death.

There was a chessboard on the table beside them, with the pieces set out, but no game started.” (66)Ryan rzwick100 https://padlet.com/revans102/ni2m96hqzcr0/wish/145631987 It is ironic that Winston ends up out of the Ministry of Love and is at the Chestnut Tree Cafe the same place where Jones, Aaronson, and Rutherford are when they return from their disappearance after being tortured. Not only is it ironic that they just end up at they are doing the same thing drinking gin, with a chessboard available and in the select corner away from others. It brings the thought into mind that do all people who commit thoughtcrime end up at the cafe or was it just select people who were deemed the ones to go to the cafe. This is confusing as it does not seem Julia was sent to the cafe and it is not known if any others had gone there too as most party members avoid the place.
Another part that relates the Chestnut Tree Cafe is that the group of three is same to the group of two that is Julia and Winston. Both groups had sold each other out in order to escape Room 101, and then had met back up at the Cafe. The song that is played “Under the spreading chestnut tree, I sold you and you sold me” is the exact same even though it is at a completely different time. This also shows that the three revolutionaries might have been in the stage to love Big Brother and that their experience could be similar to Winston’s as they might not have felt the same connection for the revolutionary fight between each other anymore.
