Flipgrid is a website/app used for asynchronous video discussions. Teachers can create a topic with a new grid. Then, students can respond to the prompt or post their own idea under the topic using a video recording and some text. Classmates can view and comment on each others' videos with text or a video response. This is a great tool for hearing from all students.

1. Practicing oral language skills - Instead of writing to complete a paper exit slip, students can record a short Flipgrid to show off the language skill they learned that day. They can also move from oral to written language by adding brief caption to their videos.

2. Asking and answering questions - My EL students have a hard time asking questions as they usually just want to share ideas versus receive them. They also struggle to use specific language from a question in their responses. Students can practice asking a question based on a given topic and then responding to other classmates' videos by turning the classmates question "around."

3. Building student portfolios - I can create a grid with a topic, "_____'s Portfolio" for each student. Then, throughout a unit students can post videos applying their language in a particular scenario, explaining a grammar/vocabulary concept they learned, or reading their writing aloud. Students can keep track of and reflect on their growth. They can also view classmate's work. Additionally, links can be shared with families and classroom teachers at the end of each unit.

4. Partner work - Students can record videos in pairs, to practice an A/B conversation, to partner read, or even to Think-Pair-Share their response to a prompt. Partners can provide feedback on each others' work.

1. Apply knowledge of parts of speech - after learning about descriptive adjectives, conjunctions, nouns, and/or past tense verbs, etc., students can create a poster or infographic putting that language element to use in their own creative context.

2. Learn by Teaching - Students can create a visual project to teach others a language skill they learned. This will help them think deeper about the "hows," "whys," and "whens" of language. Becoming the teacher will help them take responsibility for their learning and will help make concepts more memorable for them.

3. Sequence Events - Students can use the image/layout elements in Canva to retell events in order, using sequence words and visuals. Older students can add more text to practice topic specific language in complete sentences, while younger students can utilize the visuals to orally retell events in order.

1. KWL - Jamboards are great for whole class KWLs. We can create a Jamboard and title the first page "What I already know about ___," title the second page "What I wonder about ___" and title the third page "What I learned." This would be great as a pre and post-reading activity.

2. Writing to Describe - Students can create a Jamboard to write to describe as they learn topic-specific language during a series of lessons (ie. one page to show and describe the characteristics of each season/geographical region/habitat/etc).

3. Open-Ended Discussions - Students can collaborate to ask and answer open-ended questions using sticky notes to reply on each question page. I can post an open ended question that requires students to think deeper about language (ie. When would you use ____ in a conversation? / Why do we use _____ ? / What if ______? / How would you compare __ and __? What kind of person is this character and why?). Alternatively students can post their own questions using a questioning language skill they learned and post responses on each others' pages.

4. Group Writing - Students can work in pairs or small groups to complete a writing assignment. They can divide up the assignment components and each student can work on their contribution on their own slide. Then they can come together to edit and revise before presenting to the class.

1. Point of view - I can use the Point of View Peardeck slide to have students write about their own point of view versus someone else's point of view. This would require deeper thinking about a certain situation and would require students to use both first person and third person language.

2. Connections - I can use the Make Connections Peardeck slide to have students connect that day's language/content learning to another text they have read or a situation they have experienced. Carving out time specifically aimed at making connections can help students make deeper meaning out of their language skills and can help them make mental note of when certain language can come in useful.

3. Feedback - I can ask a question that requires students to move a draggable to express their feelings about an idea or skill. For instance, "Drag the star to show how confident you feel in using ____ in your writing." I can then view all of my students responses, reflecting on where they placed themselves on the scale and what that means. This can help students develop their own reflection/metacognition skills and can help me plan for re-teaching or extending in the following lessons.

1. Brainstorming - Students can create a post using visuals, words, or even voice or video clips to brainstorm about a new unit topic, uses for a particular language skill, or ideas for an upcoming project. Students can respond to agree, disagree, or add onto their classmates' posts. Students can all respond on a class Padlet or small groups can be assigned their own and classmates can collaborate with specific team-mates.

2. Mind maps - Students can work on their own Padlets to create mind maps about a topic. At the end of each week students could make a post adding to their mind maps, using both the language and content they learned that week. (ie. Week 1 - Name and describe features of ____, Week 2 - Using verbs and adjectives that relate to the topic, Week 3 - Sequencing ____, Week 4 - Comparing and contrasting ____, Etc... Students can share their mind maps with each other throughout the unit or at the end of the unit. The links can also be shared with families.

3. Complete the sentence/story - I can make an initial post with a story starter and ask students to each make a post continuing the story using the language they learned that day. Alternatively, I could also make several topics/sections, each one containing a different sentence starter, and have students post under each one to show how they would complete the sentence.
