Alex K-M

The majority of paintings in the neolithic period were discovered in caves. This may be a result of survivorship bias. However, what is more likely is that human tech was still rudimentary at this time, so communities housed themselves in naturally occurring parts of their environment (caves) rather than building housing themselves.

Common images in these caves are depictions of native wildlife, human figurines are sparing, though handprints are sometimes present. The people who created these works likely based it off of what they saw, and what felt important to them. Another important factor to consider is cave paintings as a form of communication. Prey may have been depicted to teach hunting. Evidence as to why these paintings were created is sparse, all that is available is there existence.

Alexandra Ventura

Prehistoric people painted mostly in caves because caves provided them shelter and a stable environment that helped keep the paintings for a long time. For example, the paintings in the Lascaux II Cave, which are over thousands years old, feature animals and often looking like they have been used for ritualistic or storytelling purposes. This is important because the survival and content of these paintings give us direct insights into the lives, beliefs, and artistic skills of our ancestors.

I say this because there’s always the same kind of paintings for communicating or to leave a record of their hunt and show the animals that they killed maybe to show how they are strong. This is important because this can be one of the reasons why they painted animals in these caves it can also be for shamanic purpose's or religious reason.

The reason why prehistoric people painted mostly in cave is because they didn't have many options to paint on. The reason why I claim this is because they had nothing but stone and sticks. The reason why this is important is because since they only had stone and some paint that meant their imagination was running wild but they also feared lots of things, combining wild imagination with fear, it will make a lot of ancient artifacts and cave paintings.

Josiah Tebalan

I believe prehistoric people painted in caves as a way to communicate and warn others, seeing how many paintings involved animals. At this time people had no specific language and most likely would look to art in order to convey a message, and with the numerous animals looking to kill people both inside and outside, it'd make sense to educate the uninformed or infants of any potential danger and whether to avoid/fight. This is important because while it might still be useless in the grand scheme of things, it at least gives the art a purpose and reason for creating it even with all the chaos unfolding in this time.

Andres Juarez

Prehistoric people would mostly paint in caves as a rite of passage as well as to depict things that are important to them. One example of this is the “Hall of Bulls” in the cave network of Lascaux in France. People painted these bulls on the wall to show that they were important to them, since the bulls were those people’s main source of food. Cave paintings also commonly depict other people, which shows how early humans valued nature and their family or tribe.

Prehistoric people mostly painted in caves probably because the caves offered shelter and protection, helping the artwork last longer. The darkness and stillness of caves may have also made them feel special or sacred. Common things they painted included animals like bison, horses, and deer, as well as handprints and simple human figures. These images might have been connected to hunting, beliefs, or rituals.

Alee Pilkinton

Prehistoric people painted mostly in caves because the walls were protected from weather so the art could last longer. Caves were also safe places to stay. Most of the paintings they made were of animals. They also painted handprints and a little human stick figures. The animals looked more detailed and realistic and the people were drawn basic.
