Even though veil really means a piece of fine material worn by women to protect or conceal the face.

An example of figurative language used would be metaphors to give the reader a better understanding of the situation. For example, "After the Egyptian and Indian, the Greek and Roman, the Teuton and Mongolian, the Negro is a sort of seventh son, born with a veil, and gifted with second-sight in this American world,--- a world which yields him no true self-consciousness, but only lets him see himself through the revelation of the other world". In this quote he uses "the veil" as the metaphor for the separation that is between the black society and "the other world" which is the white society.
-Andrea

As in the text by Du Bois, he uses a metaphor to compare certain things such as: describing what the “prison-house” was, what the word unscalable meant as he described both of these things in the story. He describes the “sky was the bluest” when I beat people which means that he takes more advantage of what does best when the sky is blue. He uses this type of figurative language in his story to make the outline of it more understanding and to help our readers know what is being said.

- Tristan Patterson

"The shades of the prison-house closed round about us all: walls strait and stubborn to the whitest, but relentlessly narrow, tall, and unscalable to sons of night who must plod darkly on in resignation, or beat unavailing palms against the stone, or steadily, half hopelessly, watch the streak of blue above." This is an example of figurative language because it compares both races lifes to a prison. He uses the example of the prison because both races are trapped but differently. The whites are trapped in a better prison yet they are trapped in their racist thoughts. The black people however are trapped in in a prison with no opportunities and only have hope. This figurative language also helps the readers understand how much more opportunities the whites have compared to the black people. The author put this quote to help readers see and feel how he felt.

At these I smile, or am interested, or reduce the boiling to a simmer, as the occasion may require." Its a metaphor because its comparing how bad his anger can get when they are saying hurtful things like that. He's not going to interact to make the situation big and worse then it is so he just keeps calm and not say anything.I interpret that he feels like if he says something then the situation will turn worse and get ugly real fast because he is a black man.
