Question 1

I was actually just reading The New Science of Learning Chapter 2 and it stated a 8 minute song that is guaranteed to put us to sleep. It is so powerful that it is not recommended for people to listen to it while driving. To pick a more applicable song, Bohemian Rhapsody comes to mind. It has so many ups and downs throughout the song that I think represent our sleep cycle.

Question 2

My biggest aha moment during this podcast was that REM and slow wave sleep helps to consolidate memories. It makes sense to me now that our brain takes in what we did/learned that day, consolidates it, and stores it for later retrieval. If we do not get enough sleep, this process cannot occur.

Great job, Heidi! I loved the incorporation of the music!

This was such a fun podcast, Heidi!
1. This is such a unique question and I really like it! Music is a great way for us all to connect with each other as well as relate to our learning. I think that Dream On by Aerosmith really reflects what our brains do during sleep. First, it talks about dreaming. Second, it builds slowly, which is similar to our sleep cycle, and then hits the chorus and goes crazy, which also seems similar to our sleep cycle.

2. The biggest 'aha' moment for me during the podcast was the facts about naps. It is always just so difficult for me to fathom taking a 90 minute nap but I also cannot usually fall asleep in 20 minutes. I have never really thought I was a 'good napper'!

What a fun and engaging podcast!! Great work :)
1. I think the song "Work From Home" by Fifth Harmony reflects what our brains do during sleep. It is always working, processing, "decluttering", consolidating while we are sleeping. I think this song helps me to realize that even though we are resting, our brain is still working!

2. My biggest 'aha' moment from your podcast was about memory consolidation. I think this is really important to remember for studying and cramming. Memories are consolidated based on importance during sleep and effectiveness is based on amount and quality of sleep. The ways to improve this process is to set aside adequate time to sleep, avoid lights (phone lights included) after a certain time, avoid excessive caffeine, and try to incorporate exercise in your day-to-day activities.

Either "Sleep to Dream" by Fiona Apple or "All I Have to Do is Dream" by the Everly Brothers are good representations of what our brains are actually doing when we're sleeping. The other song that always comes to mind is "Enter Sandman" by Metallica. All of these songs show how active our brains our when we're sleeping!

2. I'm always fascinated by the stages of sleep and how they are all important to our cognitive functions! When you were talking about REM sleep and how that affects memory consolidation made me reflect on how when my sleep patterns are poor, I can't remember anything!

· What song do you feel most reflect what our brains do during sleep and/or the importance of sleep?

o Why?

§ This question was surprisingly tricky for me! It’s like every song I have ever known left my head. I really liked Abbie’s post about “Never Enough” from the Greatest Showman and can relate to that. I’ll have to follow up with another song from the Greatest Showman, but mine is “Come Alive.” The beginning of the song talks about stumbling through your days, being like a zombie in a maze, and then being able to flip the switch. I feel like this is me when I do not have enough sleep. I’m just trying to make it through my day. But as the song goes on, it gets more lively and the song itself starts to come alive. Similarly, I feel more myself when I have more sleep. That’s when I feel the best and am ready to fully take on my day (not just slide by). It’s when I come alive (after coffee of course).

· What was the biggest ‘aha’ moment for you during the podcast?

o Why?

§ My biggest ‘aha’ moment was that sleep can help remove neurotoxins, I do not think that is something we have heard yet in other podcasts! I also found it interesting that sleep can help with your appetite. I know I find myself snacking more when I am tired in order to stay awake, but I did not think of it going the other way around (where sleep can help
regulate hunger)! It’s like a double edged sword. I eat because I am tired and not sleeping enough can also throw off my appetite.

· I really enjoyed your podcast, the songs made it really fun!

Thank you Allise for sharing your ideas! And your Maroon 5 song is perfect as there is no right or wrong! I too think 20 undisturbed minutes is ideal, but I usually find it hard to instantly sleep and/or find undisturbed time! ;)

Thank you for sharing your ideas Karliana! Your song connection was very powerful as I definitely could relate especially when I don't get enough sleep. I too thought it was interesting with two sides of the coin of hunger and appetite regulated to some extent by sleep.

Question 1: I honestly struggled with coming up with a song that resembles what our brain does while sleeping. I just kept thinking about nursery rhymes with this question. Probably, because I work at a daycare where I we use nursery rhymes to help kiddos sleep. Something else I was thinking about was the song with lyrics like "Sandman come bring me a dream" (not sure on the actual title of the song), but I definitely thought about this one.
Question 2: My biggest 'aha' moment, is when I think about a sleep routine. I never really thought that I had one, but now that I think about it. I do the same thing. I always put my phone on the charger, my left arm under my pillow with my leg slightly bent. In about 5 minutes, I am always sleeping.

This was an awesome podcast, great job!!!

Thank you Trina for sharing your thoughts! What great songs that you came up with! They definitely fit the theme of the sleep cycle! And it is so interesting how we are all such creatures of habit....as am I...even when it comes to sleep routines!
