Pink elephants on parade is a song and animation sequence from the 1941 Disney film dumbo. The scene happens after dumbo and his mouse friend become intoxicated and start to hallucinate the dancing elephants around them. It was directed by Norman Ferguson laid out by Ken O’Connor and animated by Hicks Lokey, Karl Van Leuven, and Howard Swift.

Pink elephants on parade is often regarded as a scene that serves no purpose in the plot. Perhaps it was made to show off the power of animation, perhaps the crew needed to just fill the run time. Many argue that the scene despite being a marvel, is just filler and there’s nothing more to it. It’s weird for the sake of being weird. The surrealistic style and trippy looking elephants always fascinated me as a kid yet the cold black eyes of the elephants and aggressive attributes scared me. I’d like to capture the same eery, yet fun and trippy feel in my project.

Activity 1
'Mad god' by Phil tippet (a highly regarded figure in the animation and visual effects world) is a recent stop motion horror film that took it's creator 30 years to create. The film shows a grotesque and intricate sci-fi hellscape full of abstraction and creative concepts. The creatures, machines and movement of the world is meticulously crafted and brimming with originality and passion. This film is relevant to my project as when I am tasked to create something in stop motion and consider the strengths and weaknesses of that medium mad god will serve as valuable inspiration to draw from. it communicates its expressions and harshness through its world and objects despite their lack of human characteristics thus imbuing expression into the strange and striking world itself

My definition of animation is creating stories that come to life. Animation is usually associated with paper and pencil but it can also be the manipulation of physical objects such as stop-motion or 3D. Animation is diverse in its materials, creative process and composition. It can convey stories that cannot be explained by words but rather expressed through motion and personality. From my point of view animation is not merely moving objects around, but how it conveys their own stories because every animation has their unique qualities to engage the audience.

“NYLONS” by Felix Colgrave was made on the 11th of August 2021.
It is a quite abstract work, following kites as they throw around farm yard animals for seemingly fun if not no reason at all, before they are hunted by a hot air balloon, the video almost feels like a short animal documentary about these kites.
The reason I chose this is because of the way the objects act, they have slight mannerisms of some animals, like how the hot air balloon hides like a predator waiting for prey or how the kites group up together like a herd of other animals, the variance in design is also very appealing to me as each kite is unique and the long dragon design kite is completely different, which is very visually interesting.

This one in particular includes the character interacting with the object, and although for the majority the object does not move, it is still given awareness of the situation as it gets louder or quieter no matter what Mickey does.

The show focuses around a reacurring group of sentient food and food related items that would constantly experience slapstick bodily harm to their own dismay. Although I have never created a piece of stop-motion media, the style and technique is something I have always respected and been fascinated by. I feel like Ooglies plays nicely into what we talked about on call with animated objects, though to a lesser degree.

It was directed by Carlos Saldanha, written by Michael Berg, Peter Ackerman, Mike Reiss and Yoni Brenner and produced by Lori Forte and John C. Donkin. I like this scene because it implies that the acorn has emotions and feels strongly about being abandoned by the squirrels despite it being an inanimate object. The weather and lighting in these scenes helps convey this well as well as the music which is by John Powell.

'Turnip head' from Hayao Miyazaki's Howls Moving Castle is a scarecrow given life and the ability to move. Despite his limited movement ability and fixed expression Miyazaki is able to communicate an immense amount of character and expression with these limited tools. He hops around briskly and happily with a lot of detail drawn to the physicality of his movement against the wind and gravity. The innocence of his mind is shown in the simplicity of his movement and helpful actions. This example is relevant to my project as it shows how through various techniques an animator can make an inanimate object with very limited movement and expression a clearly defined and memorable character.

‘fluffy’s third eye’ is a short animation by Vewn animated in 2016. It tells the story of a cat, ‘Fluffy’ that tries to open his third eye only to realise it is too overwhelming and he wants to get rid of it. I have chosen this animation as inspiration because I enjoy the use of mixed media techniques displayed in the animation, the combination of digital and traditional art is something that inspires me. The use of colour is very minimal and I think that is very effective in telling the story, how dull Fluffy's life and the world he exists in is. I love how Vewn’s animations leave lots of room for interpretation, everyone who watches their work will gather different meanings from it. The simple art style and the unsteadiness of the lines and the constant shaking adds to the feeling of unsettledness the viewer experiences from their animations and is something I would like to be able to do myself. The angles chosen for many of the shots are awkward and don't make sense in real life, this adds to the surrealism of the story and the animation in a very effective way and is something I take influence from in a lot of my own art which is why I have chosen this example to inspire my work.

It moves fairly similar to a lizard. It appears through out the film. Being the home of our main cast. The castle being a sign of wonder. Its also made of junk yet has this beauty to it. Its got eyes and a crooked mouth aswell. Feet like a chicken. It gives it human qualities even more while it moves and breathes.

I choose this as inspiration due to the traditional art and beautiful animation that studio ghibli is renowned for. Even the mouths the characters have are drawn in to fit with the design of the original object.

Arrietty is a film by Studio Ghibli inspired by the children's book "The Borrowers" by Mary Norton, though the storyline only follows the basic elements of the novel's story.

The story is about a Borrower named Arrietty, living under the floorboards of a large mansion. During a night collecting things for her family with her father, she is spotted by the son of the mansion owners, Shou/Shawn (Depending on the language the film is being watched), who is preparing for a major surgery to save his life. While the two are developing a friendship and Arrietty's family are preparing to move out of the mansion for safety sakes, the two young heroes don't realise that the mansion's maid, Haru/Hara, is hunting down Arrietty and her parents.

The film is a great story of growing up, paired with stunning visuals of the world through a miniature lens, via Arrietty's perspective as the main protagonist. It's scenery adds to the nature based aesthetic tied into the scavenger habits of the Borrowers within the story, which brings in a sense of free-spiritedness to the wonder already there, which ties in well to the main protagonist's personality.

"Home sweet home" is an animation about a house going off on it's own adventure with other houses. I've chosen this animation as I admire the characterisation of each building using structures from the real world, but also adding its own unique spins on real-world people and objects to give the houses more of a relatable quality, eg: turning overgrown leaves into an old man's beard, or making a doghouse like an actual dog full of excitability. They meet with other buildings during their adventure just as people would meet other people, who are represented based on structures found in each area such as water towers and caravans. The houses are able to display emotion through their movements rather than anything spoken, and are nicely personified throughout the animation.

Animation has developed over the years from a small artform to becoming a well renowned factor in daily living, whether it be used for entertainment, industry or education. Animation is a fantastic representation for inciting emotion, feeling and thought through giving still images life and relatability, and animation can bring this through whether the animated subject can feel emotion or not. Despite this, animation can be made with hundreds of deeper connotations, or none at all. The beauty in making something move is the option to give it an in-depth, deeply purposeful existence, or not at all.

The animators where able to make the carpet extremely expressive through its movement. They would have the carpet flop over if it was sad and its tassels would flare out if it was excited/surprised. This will be useful for my research as it will help me to find ways to characterise the inanimate objects I use for my animation, without just using words, sound and facial features.

For activity one I have chosen "Ponyo". I have chosen Ponyo because not only is it an animation that inspires me but there is one scene in particular that I think will help and inspire me for this project. Ponyo was made in 2008 by studio Ghibli and was directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It was an adaptation of the little mermaid from Disney but told differently. In this scene you can see the waves following the car, chasing it. The waves are designed to look and act very fish like, flopping around in some scenes when the waves crash into things or swimming in schools of large and small fish (waves). It gives the ocean alot of personality and makes the scene so much more dramatic and fun to watch. The car is driving away and is being chased/followed from these large waves almost like a fish chasing another fish. It is pleasant to watch and always amazes me with the way the waves look and act in the scene for visual and dramatic effect.

https://youtu.be/s5Yj-lO1UI4

I have chosen the "Footstool Dog" from Beauty and the Beast, as it is a great example of adding life to an object in a simplistic and manageable format. The footstool's tassels act as a dog's tail and snout, wagging when excited and pointing in different directions. The drapes over the footstool are a fantastic way of mimicking a dog's long fur, and the shape of the legs are made in a way that almost represent dogs paws. The section of a lighter orange on the footstool's covering can even represent how dogs can have different coloured markings on their fur. The footstool is small and low to the ground, giving it a silly sort of energy when it runs and representing the bouncy nature of a smaller dog. I find this example will be useful for my own ideas as the animators have taken careful consideration in how they wanted this object to be personified and what characteristic's to give it that would fit, and the movements to go along with it to give it life and energy appropriate to its desired character.

The advance of computers have evolved over time, now animated films today are all now created with computers all different types of technology using computer-generated images which makes animation be created much faster. Animation is a brilliant way to convey a story from the use of story telling but also the use of language from body language , emotions, objects, people, theme and nature. I have chosen “monster house” as inspiration as I admire the idea of taking something so dull and simple, a house, and turning it into a “scary” movie. As well as many other things it can be used as a form of escapism through stories that could be as simple as motions rather than words.

"Cat Soup" is a 2001 short animated film directed by Tatsuo Satō who took inspiration from the late Mangaka, Chiyomi Hashiguchi, the creator of "Nekojiru Udon" (the official anime series of the two protagonist of Cat soup, Nyako and Nyatta)
Cat soup follows the surreal adventure of Nyatta, an anthropomorphic kitten, who after the death of his sister Nyako, managed to reclaim parts of her soul, bringing her back to life but leaves her brain-dead. In order to return his sister back to normal, Nyatta travels to the land of the dead to retrieve the remaining parts of his sister's soul in an effort to save her.

This animation inspires me because of its amazing storytelling ability through its use of metaphors found within the surrealistic scenes. The Suttle hints presented through its visual metaphorical depictions are both dark and philosophical interpreting real world problems from division of race to the cruelty of human selfishness, yet all displayed through Nyako's travels. The animation also being simple in term of its childish innocent style and characters contrast the deeper meaning behind its story but also remains as a classic piece of traditional Japanese animation from the late 90s. A major influence for me throughout my upbringing, the fascination of storytelling in art and how I am able to respond upon the issues within society through different art forms is why I chose this animation as an example of my inspiration.

She gets more attention from parents, is cooked food she actually likes and her toy box is full of toys that can move and fly by themselves.

Machinarium is a puzzle point-and-click adventure game developed by Amanita Design. released on the 16th of October 2009. The designer being Jakub Dvorský (who was also the founder of Amanita Design)

Jakub took inspiration from both steampunk and found object to create the characters and world building presented in Machinarium. Although simple in design the way characters are presented all felt unique and diverse on their own without the help of dialogue, each part that makes up the characters all serves a purpose despite them being mostly made up of scrap metal and junk, this goes the same for the background with most of the objects requiring some sort of creativity in order to serve a goal for the narrative progression. This example is relevant to my project as it displays not just the visual aesthetic but the function of the objects and how it plays a role in defining a character.

"Chainsaw Man" is a 2018 ongoing Manga by author Tatsuki Fujimoto, with an animation set to release.

I have chosen chainsaw man as its main protagonist Denji is a good example of anthropomorphism. Replacing certain human features and limbs for objects that causes damage and harm, like having a chainsaw as a head, it personifies Denji's characteristic as being violent and reckless like a total madman. The revving of the chainsaw to the constant rotation of the chain can be interpreted as the rage and adrenaline build-up of Denji, a clever use of an objects functionality to build emotion and mood. This sets a perfect description as to how the audience view Denji's personality with it being portrayed quite literally through his visual design. I find this as a great example as to how even objects carry certain traits that can be paired up to certain personalities whether it's the function, purpose or visuals.

Official anime trailer (Content Warning) - TV‌ア‌ニ‌メ‌『チェ‌ン‌ソー‌マ‌ン』‌ティ‌ザー‌PV‌ - YouTube

‘Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron’ is a Dreaworks animation depicting the life of a wild mustang in the old west. It was directed by Kelly Asbury and Lorna Cook, and produced by Jeffrey Katzenburg and Mireille Soria. Since its release in 2002, it has become a classic Dreamwork production, and serves as a beautiful example of the possibilities and wonders of animation.

The film follows the story of Spirit (the wild mustang) who, after being captured by United States Cavalry soldiers, is taken far from his beloved home and mother. He is then freed by a Lakota man being held captive by the soldiers as the two of them manage to escape. Spirit is taken to the man’s village, where he lives in peace for some time, and learns the ways of the Native Americans. He falls in love with a mare named Rain, and he begins to feel torn between his new harmonious situation, and the home that he was snatched from. In this particular scene (linked above), the film beautifully captures him falling in love with Rain, yet struggling with the dilemma he faces.

I have chosen this animation to research and to inspire me with my project because of the combined 2D and 3D animation techniques used throughout the four year process of creating it. The studio used 3D graphics for the backgrounds and scenes of the film, and 2D hand drawings for the characters. The 3D graphics allowed free range for the camera to move around (at times, even moving around at 360 degrees). This - combined with the traditional 2D drawings - made this animation strikingly different to others. By drawing the characters by hand, it allowed the artists to create a lot of expression in the horses’ faces, which the directors believed would have looked too comical if done with 3D animation. The main challenge that they faced was creating scenic backgrounds that still had the traditional painterly look. Therefore, they used acrylic paintings (created by Nathan Fowkes) as texture for the 3D modelling. I find the entire process fascinating, and I find that the use of the paintings captures the moods and scenes in such a delicate yet striking and memorable manner. I also find that it captures the beauty in the old west’s nature that creates a great appreciation for it.
Furthermore, whilst I will be creating a hand drawn animation as part of this project, the 2D aspect of this film makes me consider all of the elements that goes into the 2D animation process. For instance, the angles, the anatomy, facial expressions, movement and dynamism.

The artist could have just drawn the illustrations fully by hand, but the scissors add another element to the piece, making them more expressive and interesting, This will hopefully help me to find more ways to make inanimate objects expressive.

Created in 2007, ‘Sound Wave’ is a sculpture of a wave that was constructed out of melted 78 rpm records onto a wooden armature. I have chosen this sculpture because not only does it visually display the play on words in its name - a representation of sound technology - but it portrays the range of music genres through the variety of vibrant colours in the records used to make it. I also like how the records have a shine to them which - combined with the bends of the melted material - creates a heavy, liquid appearance, thus creating a sense of movement. This is another reason for me choosing this artwork to research, as it will inspire me with creating a sense of movement in the animations I will create for this project; particularly the stop motion animation, in which I have to use household items.

Francis Neil Dawson is a New Zealand sculptor, who uses aluminum and stainless steel. I’ve chosen to look at one of Dawson’s sculptures: ‘Fern’ located above Wellington's Civic Square in New Zealand. It was created in 1998 by a joint commission from the city gallery, Wellington sculpture trust and New Zealand Festival of the Arts. Dawson took inspiration from nature around him, notably tree ferns. The sculpture is made out of aluminum using cut-out shapes of silver ponga fern and other varieties of ferns shaped together in a sphere; he painted the interior gold and the exterior silver colored.

This is relevant to my project because Dawson chooses ordinary simple objects, such as leaves and flowers in his artwork to create fascinating sculptures. He repeats the objects in his sculptures; finding ways to utilize single objects. This is effective as it demonstrates that you don’t need a lot of material to create interesting artwork, which I can learn when creating ideas and animation.

Spirited Away is a 2001 Japanese fantasy Film animated by Studio Ghibli directed by Hayao Miyazaki. I chose this film because I admire the detail in the art and the uniqueness of all the characters but moreover Miyazaki cultivates anthropomorphism in Spirited Away to strengthen the relationships between humans and the rest of nature. Some examples of anthropomorphism used in this film are the paper mannequins known as Shikigami. They are made of white paper, have a head, body that ends in a tail and wings which enable them to fly. In the film, they are considered as both spirit and an object of use. Although they may seem emotionless you can see their intentions of harm when they inflict pain on others with paper cuts. Other examples of anthropomorphism used in the film include talking ducks, frogs and soot and lampposts that come to life. I aim to apply similar expressions and movements used in the film to my subjects to make a simple everyday object come to life to give it character and personality.

I have chosen the Magic Carpet character from Aladdin since I like the anthropomorphism in the character, even with no human emotion or human body form but expressing such a way of emotion from the carpets movement. The added accessory on the corners create movement like feet and hands which can help show the character pointing and what type of pose it will project. I have chosen this character because I love the movement there is to the character and you don't need arms, legs or a face to convey emotions.

Beauty and the Beast (1991 Film) is an American animated film by Walt Disney Animation Studio. It is based on a fairy tale by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont, same name as film and 1946 French film by Jean Cocteau. Beauty and the Beast film was released on November 13, 1991 and directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise who have both been directors on several older Disney animated films.

The film is about a prince who gets cursed by a witch turning him into a frightening beast. Several years later, in a nearby village Belle’s father is kidnapped by the Beast.. Belle enters his castle and with the help of the enchanted servants she is able to help the Beast break free from the curse and they host a celebration in the castle.

I’ve chosen Beauty and the Beast 1991 because it features a variety of anthropomorphized objects such as: wardrobes. tables, cutlery, clock and much more. It is relevant to my project as the brief is to make inanimate objects move. This film does a fantastic job at bringing mundane objects to life, some of them don’t need any facial expressions to bring them to life. For example, The Beast’s footstool is animated to act like a dog and is achieved through behaviors of which a dog would do like: wag its tail and greet people. ‘Be our guest’ song showcases the directors impressive knowledge on how to animate kitchen cutlery, chairs and plates to have personalities.

This film provides me with concepts on how to animate lifeless objects through motion and actions to make them believable.

"Moana" created by Disney and released in December 2016.

We can evidentially see throughout the film the use of anthropomorphism through the use of the water. I find it fascinating how easily you can capture the waters emotions just through basic body language and movement rather than the use of facial expressions. One scene in particular where these emotions are noticeable would be when Moana (as a toddler) comes into first contact with the ocean. Moana tilts her head when the ocean approaches her, only for it to tilt its head back to her. You can easily sense the curiosity between the two characters, the slow movements of the ocean as it approaches Moana also gives the sense of friendliness and caution as it moves towards the small girl.

Another scene is when Moana comes into contact with the ocean again as a teenager. You can see the excitement in the ocean as it almost 'dances' and 'prances' around once Moana learns her destiny to return the "heart of Te Fiti".

Adding on another scene where the emotion in the ocean is noticeable is when the character Maui has been told he is no longer a hero to the world due to him stealing the "heart of Te Fiti". Maui looked from Moana shaking her head to then the ocean also shaking itself in the "no" motion, showing its agreement towards Moana.

I would use this as inspiration as to how you can use body language and movement to display emotions in objects rather than relying on facial expressions. This would also help me develop exaggerated expressions in characters with facial features by adding body language along with the facial expressions.

https://youtu.be/Mp1_PuUoSaM

‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ is a stop motion animation directed by Wes Anderson, and is a 2009 adaptation of the 1970 novel (of the same name) by Roald Dahl.

The story follows the character Mr Fox, who partakes in hunting sprees at local farms (his targets being chickens , geese, ducks, and turkeys). Consequently, his hunting antics result in him, his family and wildlife friends, being hunted down by three particular farmers - who each have specialty farms, one being in the cider business. In order to escape the wrath of these farmers, the animals eventually have to settle into sewers as their new homes - following a wonderful raid of the farmers’ joint grocery store.

For this stop motion film, the character puppets were first constructed out of plasticine clay, which allowed the artists to create hyper detailed and realistic features for each character. Wes Anderson was very passionate about creating this stop motion, and the hand-made aspect gave it a warm, wholesome feeling. As to be expected with the stop motion process, this film took a long time to make. In fact, production commenced in 2004, and was released in 2009. The attention to detail - with 126 different handmade sets and over 4,000 props - did pull off, and ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ became a cult classic.

I have chosen this film as inspiration for my project because of the attention to detail a used and patience demonstrated through its creation.

The obelisk from Stanley Kubrick's 2001 a space odyssey is striking example of an object used in a piece of art. The structure is omnipotent and incredibly mysterious making it a very memorable aspect of a film crammed with artistic imagery and icons. The obelisks is used to tie together the large tapestry of humanity Kubrick weaves leading to the object being a core aspect of the film storytelling without a single sign of characterisation or life. This is relevant to my project as it shows that sometimes the lack of life and emotion can work in the benefit for a story by creating a mysterious presence in the story and create a memorable piece of iconography.

This sculpture is compiled of pieces of rubbish Mr. Sewell has collected from dumps, yard sales, flea markets and the side of roads. I really liked this piece as it instantly grabbed my attention due to the bright colours and varying textures. I want to take inspiration from Mr. Sewells work as he compiles an array and random materials that he finds and is able to create a beautiful, intricate piece if art from it

The series the titular characters Wallace, a human inventor and Gromit, his loyal Dog. I chose this animation because of how it creates personality without any speech. Gromit never speaks yet has a clear-cut personality thanks to the expressiveness and exaggeration from his movements and facial features. This helps the characterisation of not only Gromit’s character but also Wallace as you can see a contrast in demeanours and focuses.

Monster house is a story of 3 kids trying to uncover the mystery of why the house across the street seems to be alive and how they can stop it from eating people. I chose this piece of work because it uses anthropomorphism to give the house a face and arms but not by just giving it those things but by using the structure of the house and its surroundings to create those features like how the windows are eyes and the planks above are the eyelids to show expression or how the decking is used as a mouth or trees that have grown into it as it’s arms. I would like to achieve something similar by using different objects in unique ways to help create movement

It is mixed media, combining traditional hand-drawn backgrounds with digitally animated characters. In all of Vincent’s works she consistently sticks with a more looser style, at times abandoning traditional perspective rules and breaks them to add to the feeling of whimsical fantasy her films portray.

This style is very inspiring to me, it teaches that something that may look unappealing to some can actually be a beautiful and thought-provoking piece of art.

Who is David Armsby
Also known as Dead Sound on YouTube David Armsby is a Scottish animator that has created a variety of different animations mostly made in blender. He is most well-known for his autodale series with his most popular video having over 11M views.
My chosen animation
I have chosen Redone as my animation. Redone is about a small robot that has woken up years after its creation with fragmented recordings of its creator. The robot starts exploring its surroundings with a child-like curiosity. The short animation ends with the robot finding a dead larger more advanced militarised version of itself with multiple skeletons, tanks, weapons, and metal statues in the same shape of the human body. the animation ends being purposely vague so the viewer is left to interpret what happened. this is explained in more detail in the video called the making of Redone.
Why I chose this animation and why I like it
chose this animation and like It due to the unique way it was made and looked. It was made with both 3D and 2D animation in blender with the characters being 3D and the Background and parts of the foreground being 2D and animated. the animation looked like it was all 2D mostly due to the style which had a lack of line art. I would like to take inspiration from this animation to try a new style of both art and animation.

Animation is, at it’s core, the illusion of movement. This can be achieved through a multitude of different medias and techniques but is ultimately through frames being put together and flashed at a rapid pace. It is a beautiful form of storytelling that runs entirely on hard work and imagination, whether that be one artist sitting at home painstakingly working away by themselves for years on a singular project, or an entire animation team that has been brainstorming and producing concept art for months. It’s all incredibly beautiful and one of the most truest forms of self-expression imaginable.

https://youtu.be/36GfaI0_B8E

Wallace and Gromit, a close shave by Nick Park is a Claymation animation made in 1995. The TV show follows the two main characters Wallace a human inventor and Gromit his Dog. I chose this animation because i grow up with this show and because of how it creates drama and a serious atmosphere within this episode without any speech. which surprised me as how easy the show makes it clear what is going on right from the beginning . Gromit never speaks yet gives the audience/viewers a clear personality thanks to the expressiveness and exaggeration from his movements and facial features. This helps the characterisation of Gromit’s character and also Wallace as you can see a contrast in demeanours which means the way you act gives you an understanding of someone character and i think this show makes it very clear even in the start the characters roles. i picked this episode as it is a very famous episode which introduce Shawn the sheep which is another show i grow up with i think this episode is good as the facial expressions alone tell the whole story. for example at the start of the episode when the sheep escapes and we see the dog through the wind mirror we see that the dog is angry that the sheep has escaped and is about to leave the vehicle and is stopped by a mystery's figure that stops the dog from going after the sheep that one scene some's up the whole story. which i think is great story telling if your able some up the rest of story just like that. another example would be when the sheep is walking around the house and we see bite marks through out the house and we see Gromit the dog we him becoming more and more surprises of what is going we known this creates the tension i like this as its done so simply but it was really effective Gromit faces expressions is what makes the tension come to life. its simplicity is why i like it. it shows you don't need words to tell a story.

Most people will know the Pixar lamp used in their studio titles and featuring prominently in their classic short 'Luxo Jr.' from 1986 being the first animation to be nominated for an academy award. The lamp has the design of a Luxo L-1, a common lamp used by designers and artists. The team at Pixar use simple movements to bring the lamps to life, analysing how different parts of the object could transform into a character.

This is very useful for researching my project, as it is a great example of a completely inanimate object being brought to life. I especially appreciate how they worked within the limitations of the real life object and didn't add any features to the lamp.

what is animation ?. to me animation is the skill to turn a flat 2d picture lifeless and empty into a moving living thing. animation is like an illusion tricking the mind into believe that what its seeing is a living thing. animation can be created in a wide variety of different ways, for example 2d, 3d, stop motion, the list goes on. but what makes animation different from any other media is that you can create anything you want it doesn't have the same limitations that movies have got, in animation the sky is the limit, the mind is the only limitation in animation. animation is very special for 20 minutes you can escape to a new world were anything can happen its unpredictable. to me its special its a place were you can escape and watch your hero's save the day i am looking at you goku.

As years go on we see how the girl grows up and gets caught up in life and with her studies and we see her struggle on achieving her dreams and getting pushed down by life but her father figure is always there for her and always helping her.
The film is a story about family love ones and the overwhelming let downs of life.

I have chosen this for my project because I admire how the creators have used no communication in this film and only the use of emotion through art to tell the story and move the hearts of anyone by just the motion of art. It makes it easier for anyone watching to understand what's going on and enjoy it.
The use of background lighting and colour shows the mood of the characters and the feel of emotion attached with it.
just like how her father would always be there in the girls life and how he is always waiting for her at the dining table, the animators had put the ceiling light directly above the table shining down referencing how her father was her light and always there to support her and when the father sadly had passed away the light is no longer there for her to be sheltered under.
I also love how the creators have thoughtfully made something as small as fixing a shoe a big reference here, for example her father always fixes the girls shoes whenever it breaks just like how he is always here for her and there to help her whenever she feels broken down.

I also had chosen this because I really admired the artwork of the 3D animation and how they made the characters look almost 2D with the soft colouring and art style. For me I like this sort of art style because I believe it can be enjoyed by any age and anyone.

The toys believe it is their job to be played by humans but one of the new toy believes he is a real spaceman on a mission.
In this world all toys are alive, whether it be a doll, car or a phone box. They are all given human like emotions and boy language.

In this scene you can see how the creators thought carefully about each and every toys different structure which impacted on their movement. for example the main characters have human like limbs and faces so they almost move exactly like a human but there are other toys like the keyboard like you can see in the background of this scene. this toy you can see how the creators used anthropomorphism to bring this toy to life, for example when the humans are coming back into the room and every toy runs away you can see how the keyboard is running away but the movement of this toy makes it look alive but yet it does not have any feet. Also in the scene when the humans leave after all the toys runway, when the closet door opens you can see the keyboard peek out of curiosity, of course this toy has no face to show emotions but the creators had put question marks on the screen of the keyboard to tell the audience and make it seem as if the keyboard is alive and confused, this emotion is also shown through its body movement how it is slightly tilted to see what is out there out of curiosity.

I will be using this in my project to remind myself the importance of movement in animation. I also really enjoy the girl “Dahlia” turning into an object towards the end of the film. (the bell and the flower.) Without dialogue the story of the film is told through the movement of the characters, be it the dancing or the changes in the background.

Start in one position and slowly end up in another. With 2D animation you start with one drawing and end with hundred, traditional or not its the same for 2D animation. With 3D animation you have a 3D object that you slowly move like a puppet, a lot like stop motion animation. One photo becomes hundreds.

Animation has been around for years and years as its a unique way of expressing yourself,

To me animation is a bottomless hole of creativity. As art can be anything with enough thought behind it. For example white field by Gunther Uecker in 1964. Uecker was a german artist who enjoyed studying light and optics. Using the nails Uecker creates the illusion of motion and tension,Uecker’s work can link back to his interests in Buddhism and Taoism.

I feel like this piece would be useful for my project as I can think up many ways this could be used in an animation setting, like a moving background or maze. This is relevant to my project as we will be experimenting with inanimate objects, and I think 9 is a very good example of this.

“Monogram” is an art piece by Robert Rauschenberg, it was made between 1955-1959.

I have chosen this example as it uses objects, but I feel it is still very impactful and conveys a lot of emotion, although no imagery of a human is shown. It is also not entirely “visually appealing” per say, it is very unconventional, and it is not very colourful or what you’d expect when you want to see “pretty” art. This is relevant to my project as I believe that art can be almost anything, and it doesn’t have to be pretty or appealing to be impactful or meaningful, and everyday objects can also become more meaningful through art.

https://youtu.be/iblGg3Rpub8

I lost my body is a French film directed by Jérémy Clapin. The film follows a fresh romance as it develops meanwhile a hand attempts to find its way back to its original body. This film inspired me because of the imaginative ways that the hand travels, it is shown walking, climbing and running. The variety of ways that a single object can be shown to move shows the possibilities of anthropomorphic animation. The hand also is given character, it is shown to be timid but determined. This is done entirely through its movement which is inspiring as it shows the amount that can be achieved without dialogue or expression.

In this scene the disassembly and reassembly of the chicken inspired me as it showed how all the bits of inanimate metal were put together to create a character. Throughout the film objects have great significance to the story such as, the spindle in which Briar pricks her finger, the utensils which the fairies use to create a birthday cake, Maleficent’s staff which causes the curse on poor little briar as a baby. The way this movie brings ordinary every day objects to life will inspire me as each object seems to have its own personality even though the only personified part of them is their behaviour and or significant meaning which is interesting as it is difficult to bring simple every day objects to life.

I chose the film spirted away by Hayao Miyazaki made in 2001
I chose this specific film to showcase how Hayao gives the animals human characteristics. for example the frog workers. they are working and moving like humans. we see them as humans because of there human characteristics but Hayao doesn't remove their animal features for example when he swells up what a frog would do. hayao also gives other non human creatures features for example some of the creates were bathing in hot springs just like a human would and room servers also like a human. but the main reason why i like this as it shows you can give and object or animal more human features without removing its animal identity which is an important topic in this movie as the main female protagonist lose her identity to baba the female which and becomes a worker for her. the movie is about her and her friend trying to get there identity back from the evil which.

another example is an object the lamp at the end of the movie greets them by leaning forward/ bowing which is a greeting and a sigh of respect in Japanese culture this gives the lamp a human feature but also keeps it a lamp by its appearance and when it moves it makes a metal cling sound allowing it to keep its original origin.

"Love" is animation by Tom Law that was created for the '48 Hour Film' competition, the earliest date of this animation being mentioned is 2013. Although the animation is very endearing with it's visuals and message of 'Love' its Tom's clever use of anthropomorphism that brings it all in with the design of both the man's wife and child clearly not sugar coating the fact that they are both sentient cacti. It works both for the film's narrative and humour as we clearly see the man covered in plasters showing that this is not the first time he has hugged his son.

This was the first in a series of readymades by Duchamp in which he took mundane normal objects and transfromed them into art. He done this by seperating them from their context.

The wizard of Oz, made in 1939, adapted from the childrens book "the wonderful wizard of oz" by L. Frank Baum, provides 3 examples of anthropomorphism. The scarecrow being the first character to appear asks Dorothy to help him down from his position in the field and wishes for her to take him to see the wizard of oz so that he might ask for a brain. This is followed by a tin man who wants a heart and a lion who wants courage. These characters display childlike ambitions and are fully aware of the fact they are not living humans. They want to ask a powerful being to make them more alive and give them what they desire to live. In the end realize that they never needed those things as they already showed that a scarecrow could think, a tin man could love, and a lion could be brave on their journey.

BoJack Horseman is an American adult animated black comedy-drama television series created by Raphael Bob-Waksberg which ran for 6 seasons between 2014 and 2020. I think one of the smartest things about the show is that they made the main character (and many other characters) anthropomorphic. The style is very simple and cartoony and the characters in the show are not all human. It allows the show to explore very dark material creating this juxtaposition between the style and the subject matter.

I also really enjoy the style changes in the show, they are used in many different ways throughout each series from showing characters backstories to inner monologues and thoughts to hallucinations, the changes in realism and style is emphasized because a lot of the characters are anthropomorphic and the use of pictures of realistic versions of them really enhance the uneasy feeling of the scenes in which they are used.

I find a lot of inspiration from the show in the way they used textures and mixed media, it added extra visual interest into a rather simple style and the use of anthropomorphism inspires me to experiment more with my own styles and characters.
Above I created a quick mood board to show my favourite examples of the different textures and styles used in the show.

These segments were Animated by Pepper films in 2010 to 2012, and used to advertise Mattels upcoming doll line, 'Monster High'. The first commercial, 'Higher Deaducation', uses animated clips from the 'Monster High Fright Song', but also unique clips introducing each character to the franchise.

I chose these short, animated clips specifically as I really like the smooth, traditional hand drawn techniques that are used. The animation really replicates the style of 90's - 2000's hand drawn 2D style, with very fluid and smooth movement. By the 2010's, a more traditional look for animation was slowly becoming phased out for Flash animation instead, or rather a more digital look style wise. These clips have a Cel painted look to them, although most likely coloured digitally, but it gives them more charm and makes them stand out more.

The use of digitally painted shading gives the illusion that the characters are 3D, making the animation appear less flat and giving it more life. The backgrounds are done in 3D, which helps with time and budget, and seeing as the backgrounds move alongside the characters it would've been easier for the animators rather than hand drawn the background to move.

The animation fits well with the look and style of the brand, which at the time was to appeal to an older audience of 8 - 13, especially within the alternative and scene fashion background.

I love how well the animation can replicate the Gothic, older teen feel of the Monster High brand. The animation is well timed to the Monster High 'Fright Song' for the commercials, reusing the dance but also the unique segments for the new doll lines, as later Doll lines would simply reuse clips from the CG animated films rather than hand drawn animation. I feel that the hand drawn animation has more character to it, and I chose this example as the animations are very fluid and bouncy, each character moves smoothly and to the beat and timing of the voice lines and music perfectly. Movement is very over exaggerated which brings a lot more life and personality to the characters.

I have chosen Howl's castle by the movie "Howls Moving Castle" produced by the Japanese animation studio 'Studio Ghibli'. The castle comes to life during the film, the outside of the castle as tall, off balanced rusted, dark colour palette. Multiple doors on the outside, cannons which smoke comes from showing when the castle breathes, multiple houses, grassy garden areas, mechanics, and the castle has legs to walk on land the legs form some sort of animal legs such as chicken legs and a sort of frog type of face using houses and a large gap to form a mouth. The castle that has a sort of human/animal form does give a human type of from from the way the castle moves and breaths.

I chose the castle as inspiration because the character has no eyes, legs or a human form which helps towards inspiration of the project. I also find the style from Studio Ghibli inspiring from the use of traditional art and using watercolour as a medium.

Based on the novel by T. H. White. This release on December 18, 1963. Produced by Walt Disney and directed by Wolfgang Reitherman.

I chosen this movie because it's not just one object that is basically alive but all of them plates, utensils, pots, pans, brushes, scrubs, mobs and brush. When Sir Ector discovers that Merlin has cast a spell over the castle kitchen to do Arthur's job of cleaning up.

My definition of animation is that it is a method of storytelling that allows you to be as creative as you want. Animation allows you to create things that might be harder to pull off in a live action film.

An example is how animated musicals are one of the best methods of portraying musicals in film, a comparison being Disney musicals compared to their live action counterparts where the CGI is not able to capture the same magic and expressive quality that the original animation did (Examples being be our guest from Beauty and the beast and Just can't wait to be King from the Lion king) animation allows the work to fully encompass the imagination of the original creator which can be seen in many animated films.

Agoraphobia is a short animation created by Victoria Vincent in 2017. Agoraphobia is a colourful animation with scratchy lines and a quirky art style. Narration runs over the animation while clips of the narrator’s dog plays alongside short clips of the environment. There is something child-like and whimsical about Vincent’s art but paired with the serious topic being discussed there seems to be an underlying edge to the work. Vincent’s rough style of animation and affinity for bright saturated colours is an element of her work that I’d wish to incorporate into my own art.

I think animation is the illusion of movement. There are many different types of animation, each distinct facet of animation takes an artist great time and patience to learn. Animations broad definition grants people the space to properly explore the genre and find their own personal style. I don’t think animation should be restricted to certain mediums and I think acting like such only stunts the growth of the artform. Seeing artists push the boundaries of animation is a large part of the appeal to me

Takahiro Iwasaki is a Japanese artist that is most commonly known for creating intricate miniature sculptures using unique materials. Iwasaki builds replicas of pylons, city grids and cranes out of mundane everyday objects such a toothbrushes and threads. Out of Disorder is his most recognisable series which depicts a post-apocalyptic version of Tokyo; this exhibit was held at the Kawasaki City Museum and portrayed many bleak industrial structures made of towels, hair, duct tape as well as many other prosaic materials. He has made a variety of different structures, but my favourite has to be his reconstruction of Edinburgh castle on a big bad in 2008. The castle itself is made from shiny black cards with each miniscule detail of the castle sculpted, down do individual windows. I greatly appreciate the attention to detail in Iwasaki’s art and I admire that he is unafraid to tackle taboo subjects in his art like what we see in his critique of industrial expansion in the Out of Disorder collection.

One of my favourite examples of anthropomorphism in animation is in the second episode of Over the Garden Wall titled “Chapter 2: Hard Times at the Huskin’ Bee”. Over the Garden Wall is a Cartoon Network miniseries created by Patrick McHale in 2014. This episode in particular features dancing pumpkins celebrating a harvest, their limbs and clothes made of straw and some even dawn farmers hats, but their faces remain unmoving. We are introduced to a diverse array of pumpkins of different genders and body types; this feature appeals to me as I feel it makes anthropomorphism more fun and believable. I also enjoy how unique and eery this example of anthropomorphism is as the pumpkin community is mysterious and unfamiliar to the main characters. In the end the pumpkins are revealed to be human skeletons in costumes but I still this the concept of a creepy dancing pumpkin society is cool. The anthropomorphic beings having their own unique separate community in a world of human beings (as well as other magical creatures) is an idea that appeals to me.

"Don't hug me I'm scared" Was originally a YouTube series that has just recently gotten its own show on channel 4. Originally created on the 29th of July 2011 by Rebecca Sloan and Joseph Pelling. It is a strange and disturbing show that is shot and shown as a play off of educational children shows, there are facts and singing to teach the three main characters the important things in life, such as creativity and time with many other examples. The "Teachers" in the show are all objects that relate to what they teach about, a sketchbook teaching about creativity and a clock teaching about time. they are all puppets with little faces, most have arms but only some have legs, yet they still all act very human.

I have chosen this as an example as it is something have been inspired by for years, I also enjoy how it is set up as innocent but always has a dark twist. I think it is relevant to me as I would also like to maybe add a dark and uncomfortable twist to my project.

Oasis depicts a forrest with blooming flowers and forage beneath the tall trees. This reminds the viewers of the beauty of nature and how it will be lost if we continue to consume and waste belongings rapidly. Worn clothes carry stories of the people that owned them and the impact of human existence. I think this is a very creative way to reuse discarded clothes and sends a powerful message about how much people waste and how we should all reuse our belongings more instead of buying into fast fashion. I would like to use something in my animation that has been used by people as I think it will relate more to humans.
