Chlamydia spreads by having unprotected sex with someone who has the infection. Many people who are exposed to chlamydia are asymptomatic or experience mild symptoms. If symptoms do occur, they may not appear until up to three weeks after exposure. Those who develop symptoms may experience unusual vaginal or penile discharge, painful urination, abdominal pain, and testicular swelling. Women who have chlamydia while giving birth, can spread the STI to their child. Newborns are at risk of acquiring pneumonia or eye infections (conjunctivitis), which can lead to blindness. Chlamydia can cause serious problems if left untreated. In females, chlamydia can spread to the uterus and fallopian tubes, leading to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Pelvic inflammatory disease can cause infertility or ectopic pregnancies. In rare cases, men can develop a painful infection in their testicles called epididymitis. The best way to prevent chlamydia is to get tested regularly and to use a condom when engaging in sexual activity.
