This is because throughout the film we see just how isolated of a person Mark really is.  Throughout the film we see how Mark continually keeps pushing people in his life away because of his ambition and arrogance, For example the film starts off with a break up, and he pushes away and ruins his friendship with his only real friend 'Eduardo', Although he does this we can see that he still seeks connection, in the way that he is obsessed with joining the 'Phoenix Club', and how he tries to reach out to Erica half way through the film, and by the end after everything, he still goes to look her up on Facebook, implying that he still has feelings for her.
