in·dif·fer·ence

Indifference is the lack of interest, concern, or sympathy towards anything. It’s a psychological, emotional, or behavioural state shown by a lack of interest, concern, or sympathy towards people, situations, or outcomes. People who are indifferent have a lack of emotion or feeling to things.

Local Indifference

Bedrosian, a new homeowner was shocked to see his house full of squatters who refused to leave. The squatters have cost Bedrosian up to $50,000 in expenses, while he can’t even live in his home. Bedrosian has turned to the police, city officials, and Ontarios Landlord Tenant Board with no help from each group. “There’s just no willingness to resolve a problem,” he said. “It’s just like, ‘Hey, if it’s not theoretically our responsibility, then who cares?” Said Bedrosian to Village Media interviewers. Action clearly needs to be taken for this poor man, injustice is on full display with this story. The local police refuse to help this man with an easy job, showing the injustice they’re treating this man with.

The next step he needs to take is to stand up for himself to help others get the courage to do the same. He’s already headed in the right direction, hiring a lawyer to help him with this battle. But, if he wants to end this situation he’s in, he needs to go above and beyond. If I were him, I would look into suing the police force/station that’s supposed to be helping him, or fling a formal complaint on every officer whose showed him a tough time.

Local Indifference

In 2023, a young man was catching up with some old friends at a restaurant downtown Orillia. A rude passerby started yelling homophobic slurs to the young man, making him feel vulnerable and unsafe, prompting him to call the police to put in a complaint. When the police showed up, they arrested the man for public intoxication. There was a video taken of the situation of the young man on the ground getting punched repeatedly by the male officer. Each officers abused this man physically and verbally. He was denied medical service at the station getting waved off by the other officers. Action needs to be taken for this young man, what happened to him is not okay! These police officers and anyone else involved in the incident should be fired immediately, what they did to this man is injustice at its finest.

This young man has all the power in his hands, if he were to press charges he would 100% win due to the evidence collected. But, he’s afraid of pressing charges, scared of a long legal battle. I believe he should press charges and sue the officers that were on duty for the excessive force used and rude words exchanged. No one should ever be treated that way by someone who’s supposed to protect you, whether it’s someone you know or not. No police officer needs to use that much force when cuffing a suspect.

Global Injustice

Dr. Nosherwan Adil speaks out about how Sudan is in an ongoing crisis and no ones looking. In 2019, Sudan tried expelling their current dictator, which turned into a big internal war putting innocent citizens at risk. Dr. Nosherwan claims that some of the big reasons that no ones helping Sudan is due to racism, compassion fatigue, and apathy. For example, when Russia invaded Ukraine n 2022, Ukraine was flooded with support and help, whilst the Sudan crisis has been receiving radio silence all around. There’s been so many other crises around the world that people are running into “compassion fatigue”. The global indifference towards Sudan also mirrors a bigger trend of apathy. This is another issue that needs to be dealt with. Sudan is receiving injustice from all around the world, and the UN which is supposed to be the ones to help them when in need.

I believe everyone needs to step up and help Sudan and other countries going through this by becoming aware of these situations. When we don’t know what’s happening, we can’t help out at all. Some things we could do is posting these events on social media, even though it’s not a fan favourite. It’s an amazing platform for spreading information, and would be a great tool for helping people become more aware of what’s happening around the world.

Global Indifference

In 2024, severe rains in Pakistan had flooded almost the entire country affecting around 33 million people. The severe floods have killed 1,700 people and displaced 8 million more. On the other end, Somalia is experiencing severe droughts affecting 7 million people facing starvation. News coverage in Canada has not mentioned anything about the travesties in Pakistan and Somalia about these severe weather disasters. But, when it came to hurricane Fiona and Ian, all news outlets were flooded with updates. A large injustice is happening right now, smaller countries who contribute to a small fraction of greenhouse gas emissions and receiving the brunt end do climate change. The larger countries who contribute a lot to greenhouse gas emissions are barely affected.

We must do something about this crisis going on. Just like with my other global indifference example, we need to get this information more mainstream so we know that it’s happening. The countries that are contributing the most to greenhouse gas emissions need to be helping out the countries they’re affecting.

Personal Indifference

The other month I felt indifferent to one of my longtime friendships ending. I didn’t even care because what she did to me was not okay. I gave her the chance to make amends but she never took the opportunity resulting in her loosing all of her close friends. If I’m going to be honest, doing this indifference assignment has helped me realize how indifferent I am to things. I just don’t care about what’s happening with most people, its not my concern or buisness.

Personal Indifference

I used to love playing softball, my family’s a big baseball family. But as of late, I’ve become so indifferent to it, like the sport has been ruined for me. I used to care about how my bothers been doing in the sport, always asking how it’s going and if he’s made any progress. Now, I just dot care about it. I don’t care for the sport, I’m not going to go it of my way to watch it. Now, I don’t watch my brothers baseball games because I just don’t care about them. If he does good then wow, classic Chase. When he does bad, well then good, he needs to earn what its like to start at the bottom.
