Chapter 2 mainly talks about health checks and what both teachers and parents can do to help and observe the child.
During Early Childhood observing the child is the most critical as early signs of illness are important. As teachers we need to stay alert to both appearance and the child's behavior.
From experience of working at a daycare setting I can relate to this. there was a 4 year old boy who we closely observed as he was showing signs of having ADHD. His attention span was one of the first things we noticed, as he could not sit or stay in one place for longer than 5 minutes. He had so much energy that he would not be able to take naps as he wanted to keep moving around, as well as when he would speak he had so many things on his mind that he would talk really fast telling parts of stories.
Daily Health checks are important too. We may spend a great amount of time with a child but at some point they do go home and we do not have a glimpse as to what goes on there.
As mentioned last week there was a girl who as soon as she walked in we noticed she had two band aids on either cheek. We asked what happened and the mom replied that the child had either bitten herself or had gotten mosquito bites. After asking the child what had happened she told us that her "mommy got mad" and pinched her cheeks making marks with her acrylic nails. After that we paid a lot more attention to her during the health checks.
Teachers bringing awareness to a child is important since again we get to spend a great amount of time with them. Asking the child questions about things they may or may not done can be important. I strongly agree with the reading that as teachers we can encourage students. Getting them up and exercising with something as simple as standing up during class to stretch. The child can see this and at home might do it and get their family up and stretching as well.

Chapter 4 is about Dealing with children's health records and screening procedures.
Having a child's health records is very important to give a child the appropriate needs. All of the health records should not be given too or talked about with other people. Should only be available for those like nurses and the childs teacher.
I believe this is important especially if it involves other children. I went through an experience where i overheard 3 teachers in high school discussing a students health records over lunch. I am not sure if they all had the right to those files but what they said was fairly disturbing. The Student had ADHD, and had depression/ anxiety. The teachers we saying things such as " No wonder they're really stupid" " I hope I don't have him in any of my classes next year". That is something you don't want to hear form teachers.
Health screenings are things we see in school today. To get hearing checks, vision checks and in certain circumstances lice checks. tracking a child's health is important to see how well or not so well the child is developing. If such screening were not provided by the schools it might be difficult for parents to get them done outside of school which can have negative affects. A child will not learn to their best ability if they are having trouble seeing or hearing.
Nutrition is also a big part. normally when a child has not eaten breakfast they seem not to pay attention in class as they have low energy. I believe that many parents do not realize the importance of eating in the morning or having healthy meals for children. Eating takeouts frequently can also be bad for a child as they will lack attention. Children need all of their meals as well as their fruits and vegtables fro a good nutrition.

Erika, that is positive that through observation you recognized that there was something amiss with the child's behavior, etc. As you indicated (and our book supports), we are with children a lot of the time, so we need to keep our eyes and ears open and let parents know if there are red flags that we notice.
Also, I can't believe teachers were talking so openly about children's health records...these are private and should be discussed privately only with proper personnel. It never ceases to amaze me how unfeeling people can be!
I noticed several typos/writing errors, e.g. "for good nutrition" not "fro..." so be sure to double check your blog before submitting it. Then, I wasn't sure what you meant in the sentence, "Eating takeouts frequently can also be bad for a child as they will lack attention."...what do you mean "lack attention?"
Other than these, you addressed some key points and tied your own experiences to them...my goal for the assignment!

Unintentional Injury replaced "Accidents when referring to injuries by children.
Risk managements
Most instances can be prevented, environmental hazards, lack of appropriate planning and adult supervision, and at times a child immature development.
From personal experiences i know about the importance of environmental hazards. When my niece was 3 years old she was in my brothers room jumping on the bed. She fell and hit her ear, not only hit it but slit her ear in half. The bed frame edge was broken and it was sticking out, her ear caught on to it. The edge was sharp enough to slit her ear.. This could have been avoided if the frame was taken out when it broke, tried fixing it, or even made sure that the edge was not sticking out.
Infants and toddlers are at the highest risk. They are impulsive and curious.
Early ed, Elementary, before and after school teachers are at high risk as well. Early Ed teachers are working with the youngest children, children are still no aware of their surroundings and the consequences. Still no fully introduced to real life experiences. Elementary School children have more experience but still are curious and are experimenting. Learning to be with other people and their different reactions to certain events. Before and after school students may feel more free because they are not in a traditional classroom setting. Students might be of different age groups working together, they are not all at the same level.. Teachers might not know the child well enough, they do not know their strengths well enough.
Accident changed into Unintentional Injury- I can see why this was changed. An accident is sudden. things may not have been prevented from the occurrence happening. I also feel like an accident is something that happens more than once. Where as Unintentional injury is more serious and in fact something could have been done to prevent it.
also having an adequate amount of adults per children is an important factor to prevent injuries.
Teachers having the correct and updated observations- each person has their own perspectives on training so many have specialties that may be life saving.
Toys and equipment in classrooms, are they safe? age appropriate?
When i was working at the daycare i would try to place myself in the child perspective. can they do the activity in safe way? can they repeat what i am trying to show them?
Preschool classrooms rules and instructions must be short and simple for them to understand.
in creating activities the book mentioned some questions teachers should ask themselves to make sure it is safe, i would ask the question like
"Am i doing this activity with enough adult supervision?"

Responding to medical emergencies,
"high quality programs" have faster and easier access to the medical help.
I can actually agree to this. There are programs that have personal specialized for specific situations.
At the daycare I was working at there was a teacher who had experience and training for children with asthma and allergies. The director decided to look for someone with those qualifications because we had 8 children with asthma and 12 with a variety of allergies. She was certified to give medications and take and emergency things. Higher quality programs have that advantage to be able to respond to emergencies, first responders usually take some time to get to their destination, having a person to be able to respond to these situations could be life saving. The CPS are fighting to get nurses for every school and I strongly agree with it. not having a nurse could be very hazardous. Basic first aid is also a plus for every person working with children to know. Minor cuts and bruises can at times lead to more serious situations without proper care. The good Samaritan law is reasonable care to the best ability of the caretaker. It is seen a lot for people who preform CPR and the Heimlich maneuver.. victims and sometimes relatives of deceased victims will try to sue the person who preformed the act. As a teacher and person of interest i think this law protects those who want to and try their best to help a person or child
CPR, CAB- Compression, airway, Breathing
Teachers are required to be certifies in CPR

Nutrients- maintaining healthy body healthy mind.
Different ages- different people= need of different supplements.
We are all different, meaning we all need more or less nutrients and vitamins in our systems. Some people have diabetes, others might be allergic to a certain substance, and others may have too much of a certain nutrient or vitamin. From Personal experience at the daycare we had the twins, one was dificient in iron so she needed special supplements whereas the sister was fine.
a fun fact I never knew was that there are 50 essential nutrients.
I personally do not think about the nutrients i need and I am sure others might not either because we just eat or drink and do not notice what we are consuming contains.
Malnutrition- under nutrition
Children and adults who lack nutrients, This is a health problem because the body is running low. malnutrition is not only not eating correctly but it can also be consuming too much. My cousin has a 3 year old daughter who is clearly obese. She was recently rushed to the hospital because she was having trouble breathing, She has trouble just getting around by walking, tires fast and can not play with other kids because she can not keep up.
Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) is a master guideline of what the daily intake should be about. again, it is different per person and what the child or adult wants to accomplish and their daily lifestyles.
I believe nutrition facts on the things we consume are very helpful and important, Here in the U.S it is a regulation but an observation i had made is in mexico they are not really required to print the full nutrition facts. Some of the snacks do not come with nutrition facts.

nutrients that provide energy
Definition of Energy= the ability to do work, work preformed by the body are locomotion and movements, building new tissues, maintaining body temperature, and digestion, absorbing, and metabolizing food.
Energy is what keeps our body running.
Energy comes from three basic nutrient groups, Carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
Base metabolic rate (BMR) energy needed to carry on vital involuntary body processes like blood circulation, breathing, body temperature, and heartbeat. Different physical activities burn energy at different levels. Running vs walking vs sleeping. Thermic energy of food energy required to digest absorb, transport and metabolize nutrients in food.
Children need more energy due to their rapid growth. My mom always tell my aunt not to get mad at my twin male cousins for eating so much. My mom always says that it is because they are growing the reason why they eat a lot, they are 12 years old. I actually showed her this chapter of the book for her to read and see what type of foods are good for them as well as their calorie intake and physical activities would be good for them..

Erika...you made some good points! The accident your sister had was one that could have been avoided...lesson for us in the classroom...be proactive in looking for things that could cause accidents and fixing them or removing them! I agree too with the last statement about supervision...it is key for those working with young children!
As for CPR and Heimlich, I am so glad the "Good Samaritan Law" is on the books...this can make all the difference in an emergency for people are afraid of getting involved and then being sued afterwards. I used to not understand why for CPA, the instructors would tell us to make sure we asked multiple people to call 911 because the first one may leave and not call. That could result in a tragic ending! Good proactive thinking on your reflection, Erika!

Erika, you chose two good chapters...nutrition is something that many of us don't study and know as much as we should...we just eat/drink whatever not knowing the effect it may have on our health! The story you told about your cousin's daughter who you indicated was obese. That is so sad that this little girl is having difficult breathing, running, and being a child! Is your cousin addressing this? I hope doctors are helping her! I am so glad you showed your mom the chapters about nutrition...yes, children eat more when they are growing but it should be within reason. If it appears that they are eating too much and gain too much weight, nutrition should be a focus for meal planning. It is difficult! I know when I was 10, my doctor put me on a diet because he felt I was gaining too much weight...the 10 pounds i lost were good, but the good eating habits I gained are still with me! I'm glad you are an advocate!
