The video on Neuromyths by Dr. Sperling resonated the most with me from the last three weeks. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work is a passion of mine that I have brought to all of my workplaces. I am currently leading 2 cohorts of SEED (Seeking Educational Equity & Diversity) at our office. One is with my internal team and the other is with 12 educators from 8 different schools (private and public).

In DEI work, I often hear people share that it is too difficult to learn all the inclusive terminologies (ex. gender pronouns, sexual identities, etc.) or to be aware of all the inclusive practices in the moment because "you can't teach an old dog new tricks," or "I've been doing this my whole life and haven't had issues with people." Through Dr. Sperling, it is clear that it is possible to learn and be more mindful with the right mindset (growth mindset). Based on the stereotypes that exist in our current society, different identities can become a tool to perform better or an obstacle that prevents people from performing to their potential (stereotype threat). Given that everyone has implicit biases, it is critical for educators to become aware of how they are impacting student learning even by the comments they make. This video was a good reminder that change is possible whether it is in the classroom academically or in the larger community socially.
