The Black Death got worse by the day and many people abandoned their families, friends, fled the city and shut themselves from the real world. People thought the reason for the Black Death was because of God's wrath descending on man. They prayed and did all the things that were religious (shown in source below) but when nothing happened, their prayers weren't answered, prevention of sickness and disease weren't cured and death of many clergy, faith in Religion decreased in Europe and this is an example of the impact on society from the Black Death.

The video below depicts the origin of the Black Death and how a simple yet dangerous disease could kill about fifty million of Europe's population. The Yersinia Pestis was believed to have originated in Central Asia where it travelled along the Silk Road and ended up in Crimea in 1343 where the disease was most likely carried in the blood of black rats who went on merchant ships. The rats were carrying fleas and when they bit into the victim, it was like they were injecting the disease into the victim.

In the historical writings written by Agnolo Di Turo, below, he describes the burials of those who had died from the plaque in Siena. The Black Death spread so rapidly and those who did not have to witness the pain and suffering, were considered lucky or blessed. Agnolo talks about how the people would bury the dead. Because there was no more space in the graveyards, the people dug big pits and buried the dead layer by layer. Once the pits were full (probably hundreds of bodies) the pit was covered with a little bit of earth and then more trenches were dug.

The Black Death spread across Europe and people died instantly. In the painting below, we see a person with a "beak like" mask. These were the doctors and they wore these masks to prevent themselves from being infected by their patients. People thought that the disease was airborne, meaning the disease was carried by air. They filled the beaks up with dried flowers, herbs and spices which they thought could prevent the sickness. Some things the normal people did to prevent the Black Death were surrounding their house with flowers, spices and herbs, sitting in sewers and the doctors bursting their buboes. An example of a treatment was when people wore herb necklaces because they thought it would purify the air.

The Black Death impacted towns and cities and this is conveyed in the historical writings of Giovanni Boccaccio. He talks about how families and friends became broken apart and the impact on towns and cities as the ministers or executives of the laws were either dead or locked away from the world and families. Giovanni also highlights the freedom and liberty of man as there was no leaders to guide the people and tell them what to do.

Treatment of Jews

In the Middle Ages, Christians already had a bad history with the Jews and so it was obvious that they blamed the cause of the Black Death on the Jews. They blamed the Jews to have deliberately poisoned the wells, desecrated the host and were the Devils followers. As a result of the accusation, the Christians went on a rampage and murdered many Jews. In August 1349, the Jewish communities of Mainz and Cologne were exterminated. They found out later that not many Jews had died from the Black Death because their hygiene was better and isolation in the ghettos. In the source below, it shows a picture of how the people though the Jews had poisoned the wells.
