The municipality of Knjaževac is located in the eastern part of Serbia, along the border with the Republic of Bulgaria and is part of Timočka Krajina. The municipality of Knjaževac has 31,491 inhabitants, of which 18,404 live in the city (data from the last population census in 2011). The average population density is 36 inhabitants per km², which makes it a sparsely populated municipality. With an area of 1202 km², the municipality of Knjaževac is the fourth largest in Serbia. Its relief is hilly and mountainous. The highest point of this area is the peak of Midžor on Stara planina (2169 meters). The lowest point of the municipality is 176 meters above sea level. It can be determined in in relation to the geographical network, geographical entities or economic-political ones characteristics of an area.  The position of Serbia is very favorable. Serbia is located in the middle of the northern hemisphere (45ta the parallel passes through Laćarak) and is equally far from the Equator and the North half. It belongs to the Balkan, Central European, Pannonian and Danube countries. The economic position is not favorable because the country is surrounded by poorly developed ones countries, but it is politically favorable because the Balkans are on the border between Europe and Asia.  The length of the border is about 2,400 kilometers, the old borders are towards Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Albania, and the new borders are the ones created by the breakup Yugoslavia - Macedonia, Montenegro, BiH and Croatia. Smederevo is the city and seat of the Danube District. It is located on the banks of the Danube in the northeastern part of Serbia. According to the 2011 census, there were 59,261 inhabitants. The wider area of the city of Smederevo has 97,930 inhabitants.

With the construction of the Smederevo fortress in 1430, Smederevo became the capital of the Serbian despotism, since Belgrade, the previous capital, was returned to Hungary in 1427. The Smederevo fortress was founded by the then Serbian despot Đurađ Branković. The Smederevo fortress was then the largest lowland fortress in Europe. Today, Smederevo is a large industrial center.
