Wasps are insects, they have 6 legs, wings and 3 body parts;  the head, thorax and abdomen.  Insects are classified as invertebrates which means they don’t have a backbone.

The Queen

Queen wasps are the only ones that can lay eggs.  The queen starts a new colony each spring and the colony can grow to 50,000 wasps in summer.  The queen can lay over 1,000 eggs. 

Stingers 

Male wasps don’t have stingers.  The female wasp can repeatedly sting, unlike bees that only sting once and then they die.

The Nest 

Wasp nests can be found in the ground, trees, walls or any cold dark place.  The females protect the nest because the females are the ones that have stingers.

There are many different species of wasp. They can be found all over the world except for Antarctica.
