The views on the education system helped shape the 1988 education reformed act. It had 2 key principles, which were: Marketisation and Parentocracy.

Various ideas were introduced, such as:
Standard Assessment Tasks - Introduced at the ages of 7, 11 and 14, on core subjects.
National Curriculum - The purpose was to standardise content taught across schools.
Leauge Tables - Published annually, and ranked schools in terms of SATS, GCSE's AND A Level results. These are open to the public.
Ofsted - A government watch dog inspecting schools and reporting their findings in public documents.
Prospectuses - Schools compete to attract pupils through open evenings, as they could no longer rely on local children attending their local school.

The education system does this by keeping parallels between schools and work in capitalist socitey. Examples of this could be:
Both of them are hierarchies
Both have rules on dress
People work for end rewards.

These parallels are referred to as the correspondence principle by Bowels and Gintis, as the education system mirrors the relationships and structures found at work. The correspondence principle operates through the hidden curriculum, meaning that all the lessons that are learnt in school are not directly taught.
