1804-1806: Captain Meriweather Lewis and Lieutenant William Clark were chosen by Thomas Jefferson to lead the expedition to explore the newly purchased Louisiana Territory. They looked for and recorded a passage via water from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean. There wasn't a direct passage through water, but they discovered new plants and animals and reported it back to Jefferson. This event led to the civil war because without the exploration of this area, the North and South wouldn't have anything to fight over.

1808- Due to the Slave Trade Clause, Congress couldn't ban the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade until 1807. The banning of the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade made it so that the trade of enslaved people across the Atlantic Ocean was no longer allowed. However, it didn't ban slavery in the United States. At this time, there were more than 4 million enslaved people in the South, so the slave population at that point, was self sustained. This event led to the Civil War because although it stopped the slave trade across the ocean, it didn't stop slavery in the United States.

The Missouri Compromise of 1820

1820- When Missouri was added to the Union in 1820, the question popped up of whether it would be a free state or a slave state. The North wanted Missouri to be a free state because most of Missouri was already in the northern part of the United States. Another reason they wanted it to be a free state, was because if slavery was allowed in Missouri, wouldn't that belief spread to all the Louisiana Purchase? The South wanted Missouri for the opposite reason, if slavery is stopped in Missouri, might it be stopped in all of the Louisiana Purchase? The end result was that Missouri would be added as a slave state, and to keep the balance of power, Maine would be added as a free state. Also, a line would be drawn across the bottom of the Louisiana Territory and all the states above it would be free states, and those below would be slave states. This event led to slavery because first, it created more division between the North and South, and second, it created confusion on whether the Missouri Compromise Line would go through the entire Louisiana Purchase or not.

Since there was a lot of cotton being produced, plantation owners needed enslaved people to get the cotton for them. This was a problem because it increased the need for slave labor in the South. This led to the civil war because the population of enslaved people was increasing at high rates, which was exactly what the North wanted to avoid.

Pro-slavery individuals in the South were willing to go along with this in hope that these new states would be populated by settlers from the South. This event led to the Civil War because when the Northwest Ordinance was written in 1787, some Southerners threatened to leave the Union if slavery was threatened which created more division in the country.

1850- The Compromise of 1850 was a compromise between the North and South for the land of the Mexican Cession. Congress decided that California would be a free state, and that the rest would be split up into two territories: Utah, and New Mexico. These territories would be decided by popular sovereignty, which was where the land would be decided by popular vote. Also, a part of the compromise was The Fugitive Slave Act. The Fugitive Slave Act was an act that made it easier for slaveholders to take back the enslaved people who had run away. This event led to the civil war because the South was getting more and more pro-slavery and North was getting more and more anti-slavery which made for conflict.
