Stage Management Mentorship Project

As a Stage Management student, I am currently very excited and motivated by attending this year’s Stage Management Mentorship Project at USITT’s National Annual Conference. 

This means a lot for me, since it was one of the things I wanted to achieve since I decided I will be a BA student. Accomplishing this as a freshman makes me want to keep pushing and working hard to make all my goals happen.

Before applying to UT, I was particularly excited to find out that they had their own Student Chapter for USITT. When I first got here, I decided that I was going to be a part of that group, but I realized that it was on hold due to the pandemic. 

Starting this semester, I am very excited to be getting the Student Chapter starting again, which hopefully will make the TD community become more united since there are already two different classes that have just been in person for one semester.

All the time I was wondering how things were happening, until I met a Cirque SM a few years later. 

That’s the moment when I realized I wanted to do that, being the one making things happen. I didn’t know that position existed, but when he explained it to me, everything made so much sense and clicked immediately in my mind.

While being part of a creative process, as a Stage Manager you get to deal with all different departments from designers to artists. This means that it is important to understand what people is worrying about and try to come up with a solution that can benefit all. 

It is also very important to try to speak the same language, this is achieved through communication, and to be an effective communicator you need to understand how the situation looks like in real life for everyone.

Being receptive to everyone’s ideas because they are as valuable as anyone else’s. Time management and sticking to a schedule is also a huge part of the respect I like showing to the people, mainly because everyone is showing up to do what they need to do and being late just makes everyone else run behind.

I consider that a working team needs to be as diverse as possible, and this can mean a lot of things.

More specifically, I would like to emphasize on a team with different backgrounds and experiences. If there are people with different perspectives and points of view, then all will be able to perceive improvement opportunities and make the process more enriching and valuable, but of course this will need an open mindset from everyone.
