Dying Coral Reefs

Coral reefs all around the world are dying out. We are going to focus on Australia’s Great Reef, in the Pacific Ocean. Some species that are suffering are coral, clownfish, butterflyfish, sharks, and many others. Some limiting factors are water temperature and salinity, depth, light, sedimentation, and emergence into air.

The major problem affecting the ecosystem is that the corals are dying because of warming, pollution, and algae. Life is affected because the reefs are dying and the fish do not have homes or food. Currently people have been reducing pollution to help coral reefs. Some people are taking action and recycling and the coral reefs aren’t dying out as much.

People should care about coral reefs dying because fish will die out and the ecosystem will be out of balance. An economic impact is that snorkeling businesses won’t be working because tourists won’t come to see the fish and coral. Some environmental impacts are some people that eat fish will be affected, and without the coral reefs less oxygen will be produced.

Our solutions that we have is to recycle and reduce pollution. Our idea would work because if someone threw trash in the ocean, they would be fined. People who don’t care about coral reefs would get in the way of our idea. Any business person can help our cause by throwing their trash away or recycling, and walking to work. Also the business people can give coupons per bottle that the customers recycle.

A healthy coral reef is colorful and full of life.

This is the difference between a healthy coral reef and a dead coral reef.

A dead coral reef is very dull and has no life in it.

Glossary

Sedimentation- dirt and minerals carried off by groundwater

Salinity- salt in water

Emergence into air- early bacterial life introducing oxygen into the atmosphere

Yellowstone is found in the northern part of Montana in U.S.A. The two species that are suffering are wolves and deer. If we don’t do something now the wolves will disappear forever. Let’s keep the wolves and keep the ecosystem going.

The wolf population has been decreasing every month for year. The wolf population in 2007, 94 packs. The wolf population in 2012, 34 packs. The wolf population in 2015, 10 packs.Do you know why they changed so much? They changed so much because the creation of the National Park did not provide protection for wolves or other predators.

The reason the deer are suffering is because their population is growing. If they keep, up they will become overpopulated. This will lead to overgrazing. Eventually, the deer will start dying from starvation and disease. This type of death is suffering.

We should be doing something, and here’s what you can do about it! One, stop trapping them. Two, stop killing them.

For the last few weeks in class, the 7th grade science students have been diligently researching the environmental issues that affect our world today. Their topics vary from the detrimental effects of invasive species, endangered species, and human responsibility. These students were tasked with the job of researching a problem of their choice. Then, they had to explain the ripple effect these problems cause. Finally, they had to explore and critique current solutions, and come up with their own solutions to solve these problems. This is quite an undertaking for anyone, so I am especially proud of these students for their hard work!

Invasive Sea stars

Josey Wahlers

JaLeigh Lindsay

Alyssa Strong

Sea stars are invading marine life in Australia. The sea stars were brought to the oceans by ships passing by Australia. The current solution to getting rid of the sea stars is collecting ballast water to minimize the spread of younger sea stars. The sea star population is decreasing slowly. Collecting the ballast water has put a dent in the population.

People should care so they are aware of what could happen to the ecosystem with the sea stars invading. Sea stars have a virus than can eat away tissue in the marine life. However, there is a solution because sea stars have a medical impact on humans that prevents tissue damage so we could use these in the medical field.

Another solution is improving shipping channels. This idea would work because it would destroy native marine communities that are already weakened by pollution which would move the sea stars away. But, some things could get in the way like destroying other habitats. From the pollution the animals in the water will not be able to handle it.

If you are a busy person you can still help. You can go once every week to a community service for the marine life and help avoid uptake of ballast water containing larvae. Also, take up ballast only at times when the larvae is not present. Last but no least you can help by exchanging the ballast.

Sea stars are a very important invading species. They are invading Australian marine life. There is a solution by collecting ballast water.

Acid Rain

Acid rain is tremendously impacting many habitats in the Rocky Mountains, it's affecting birds, insects, frogs, salamanders, and underwater life. It goes into the soil, then into the water. Then, the animals that eat underwater life (foxes, birds, bears, snakes, and turtles), will go extinct from lack of food. Little is known about the aquatic ecology of Rocky Mountain wilderness areas because access is limited by lack of roads, steep terrain, and snow accumulation that lasts most of the year. Knowledge of the environmental conditions of Rocky Mountain wilderness areas and the risk of damage to them primarily is a result of acid rain and related water-quality issues.

Acid rain is caused by a chemical reaction when compounds like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released into the air. They can rise into the atmosphere where they react with water oxygen and other chemicals to form acidic pollutants, or acid rain.

There are a few solutions to the problem acid rain is causing. If factories release less smoke into the atmosphere, then there will be less acid rain. People need to stop using resources as often because it is causing acid rain. 95,000 lakes are already damaged or destroyed. There are also things that everyone can do to can prevent acid rain.

If the problem continues, the population of the animals will go down, so the people who hunt there will have to go somewhere else. Therefore, businesses will get less money. It will be all over the news. The population of animals will still continue to go down, so the wolves who hunt there will have to go somewhere else and if they go anywhere with cattle, they will 🤬 the cattle and people will lose money.

We need to end fire ants!

Introducing the ecosystem!
Fire ants are native to Brazil. The came to North America because of soil transportation. Fire ants affect other insects because they compete for the same food. They also affect humans with their irritating bites. Their bites leave people with rashes and can even cause death. Fire ants do have some predators in North America. They are armadillo, birds, and lizards, but that is not enough to solve the problem.

Problem?

Fire ants are damaging the ecosystem. They are eating seeds and hurting people. This needs to be stopped. They are an invasive species. We need to 🤬 these ants or the ecosystem will be ruined! The ants' habit of eating or damaging seeds can cause major changes in an ecosystem over time. Fire ants are also predatory, attacking insects and animals that pollinate native plants. Fire ants can cause considerable damage to the agricultural industry.

Awareness!
People should not care because they are not native and should be killed off. They also damage plants. We should care more about killing them than helping them.

What are we doing to get rid of these pests?

People are buying fire ant killers to prevent fire ants from getting into their house.

Sometimes, they work.

Africanized bees

The ecosystem of the Africanized bees is in california. The two species affected are humans and European honey bees. The bee population has to stay in balance and have enough nectar because they would not survive without it.

Africanized bees are dangerous because they attack people in numbers much larger than European Honey Bees. Africanized bees tend to have much bigger populations than European bees, and they are very defensive and aggressive. So, anyone near their hive could become a victim. Because of this, they are known as “Killer” bees. Around the world, africanized bees 🤬 1000s of people every year. When examining victims of these attacks, doctors have found that these victims have ten times more stings than those attacked by european honeybees.

Drone-flooding, is effective in many areas. Drone flooding is when a beekeeper takes one species of male bees and puts them in the hive with another species of bees. When colonies become over ran with africanized bees. Flooding the hive with european drones can breed out some of the aggressive behavior in bees.

Thankfully, they haven’t come to Missouri yet, but that doesn’t mean they won’t. Ways to keep yourself safe from africanized bees are to be on the lookout for places they could be living. You should also look for holes in the ground, in large plants, such as trees, and in sheds. Be aware of bees that are behaving strangely.

Read more at: https://www.desertusa.com/insects/avoid-africanized-honeybee

by hs mg

There is a plague in the shark population. This problem or plague as I said, is shark finning. A process in which the shark’s fins are cut off, paralyzing the shark. Then the sharks are tossed overboard, because the sharks are paralyzed, they will most likely die helplessly to hungry predators like Dolphins, Sperm whales, killer whales, aka the Orca, and octopus. And, they need their fins to propel themselves, and without their fins the sharks will drown. Because of this, the ecosystem gets unbalanced.

When shark populations decrease, a ripple (the effect can spread throughout the rest of the ecosystem.) For instance, the loss of the smooth hammerhead, because they went extinct, their prey, rays and other small feeder fish to increase. Because of the increase these fish and rays to unbalance the ecosystem. This not only hurts the populations and the ecosystem; it also harms our fisheries. To help the sharks we can raise the price or make it illegal to have/sell/eat shark fin soup.We can help raise awareness by wearing clothes like the tee on the left or right. You can also help by buying a poster from: www.stopsharkfinning.net/shark-fin-soup-facts/.

Also we can help by running anti shark finning marathons. Get more info about how to help stop shark finning from these sites www.stopsharkfinning.net/shark-fin-soup-facts/ and tps://www.sharktrust.org/en/stopsharkfinning !

The San Francisco delta smelt need help. They’re going extinct. You should care because they help keep plankton from becoming overpopulated. The main thing that's killing this fresh water fish is invasive weeds and their natural predator, the sunfish. If this is left untreated this may cause a major ecological catastrophe.

The weeds are over crowding where the delta smelt lives. This is making it difficult for them to find food. The delta smelt live in shallow water, so when the invasive weeds decompose, they fill in the water the smelt live in. Sunfish are a problem because they eat the larva of the delta smelt larvae (baby delta smelts).

A solution for killing these invasive weed is bring their natural predators to eat them. What we are doing to prevent the delta smelt from going extinct is getting rid of these invasive weeds. Ways you can help us save them is don’t make delta smelt into bait. Also, don’t put things into water. Without this link in the chain, the environment will be hurt. This is all we have to report for now.

Let's Save them

help them

Adult delta smelts are only about 2 inches long

this is it at adult stage

please helps them

We need Grizzly bears

Grizzly bears live in many different types of habitats including dense forest to subalpine meadows, open plains and arctic tundra. Also,Yellowstone is in Wyoming. The two species that bears eat are mainly fish and elk. Limiting factors for this ecosystem are grasslands and overpopulation.

The major problem is that hunters hunt bears. We need to stop Grizzly bear hunting. The population of animals that the bears eat get too high. Then, grasslands and plants start to decrease . When these populations get too high they eat our plants then we won't have enough food for us to eat. Since elk and other animals are eating farmers’ crops. Humans won't have enough food and farmers will go out of business.

People need stop Grizzly bear hunting unless absolutely necessary. This is already being done in Yellowstone, and it is effective because the bears are increasing dramatically. Since poachers are ignoring the rules, we could put a tracking collar on the grizzly bears in Yellowstone. This will help the conservation agents know where the bears are getting poached or killed.

If you ever go to Yellowstone, help the conservation department by making sure you know what you are shooting at when hunting,Watch where you drive to make sure you do not hit the bears ,and Stay up to date on your bear safety.

How the Grizzly bears population decreases.

A Grizzly Bear eating a fish.

Grizzly bear protecting her cubes.

<sub>

Grizzly cube doing gangnam style

Grizzly bear hunter shot a bear.

A Grizzly bear standing in the woods

Grizzly bear with her cubes walking down the road.

The polluted air is affecting humans and animals. Limiting factors: More than 90% of people worldwide have to breathe polluted air and the people most likely to suffer are those who live in crowded places, where the shift to cleaner forms of transportation and fuel has not happened ( or is happening too slowly). This is particularly evident in some areas of Asia and Africa.

Define Problems Our problem affecting the ecosystem is air pollution. “The contributing factors to pollution are a reliance on using solid fuels for cooking, Burning waste and traffic pollution from very old cars.” How is life affected? First, An estimated 7 million people were killed by diseases related to indoor and outdoor air pollution alone. Second, Data for nigeria included in the newly released Little Green Data Book 2015 indicates that 94% of the population is exposed to air pollution levels (measured in PM.5) that exceed WHO guidelines and air pollution damage costs about 1 percentage post of Gross National Income ( “GNI” Is the total domestic and foreign output claimed by residents of a country. ). Third, The World Bank has already taken a first step in curbing pollution by supporting a rapid bus system in Lagos that is taking cars off the road and helping to make transportation more efficient. More must be done to bring about cleaner fuels and safe waste disposal.

Raise Awareness

People should care because it could cause suffocation, and even death. Economic impacts affect humans birth (birth defects). Environmental impacts affect growth in plants. Effect on human life is death. But the US does not receive crops from Onitsha, Nigeria.

Current Solutions

Nigeria’s people have been cleaning up Nigeria’s streets and gutters and houses and the people of the U.S. have been helping out by going to Nigeria and helping people clean up the city. It is working out really well but at the same time not so good. They need more people to help with this problem. The people are helping out are making a huge difference in the ecosystem. It’s really effective to this city. All these people are decreasing the air pollution and it’s making this ecosystem better.

Design a solution

Realistic solution: To stop dirtying up the air, filter the air. How would it work? Stop allowing facilities to release polluted air into the clean air. The only thing getting in our way is we don’t have enough money to stop these facilities from polluting the air.

Call to action

People that have enough money and who are supportive to this problem could donate money to the city of Onitsha. Others can go to Onitsha and help clean up. People could build filters or other machines that help out the air and water. Be really clean.

Sources: http://www.konbini.com/ng/lifestyle/onitsha-has-the-worst-air-pollution-in-the-world/

https://www.cnn.com/2016/05/31/africa/nigeria-cities-pollution/index.html

http://www.worldbank.org/en/news/feature/2015/06/16/in-lagos-nigeria-a-plea-for-action-against-pollution

http://databod.com/general/polluted-air-cities-nigeria/

The White Tiger

With the white tiger rapidly disappearing because of it's only enemy man, the ecosystem could be ruined in South America. Wet jungles help support the vegetation and the white tiger relies on the jungle’s resources. Although it is illegal to poach white tigers it still happens because their fur is expensive and very valuable. White tigers are important because they keep their preys’ population from being over populated.

A few fun facts, The tiger is the biggest species of the cat family.Tigers can reach a length of up to 3.3 metres (11 feet) and weigh as much as 300 kilograms (660 pounds).Subspecies of the tiger include the Sumatran Tiger, Siberian Tiger, Bengal Tiger, South China Tiger, Malayan Tiger and Indochinese Tiger.

An awareness we can start is, “Save the White Tigers!” In this awearness we will spread the word about how important white tigers are. Why should we worry when the white tiger is in South America? We should worry because white tigers help with overpopulation in most parts where other predators are not available. Take away the white tiger and you’ll have overpopulation in most parts of the world that will vastly spread to all over the world this also doesn’t help since the Lion is going extinct as well. We can save the white tigers habitat by not cutting as many trees. Also,It is bad for the tigers and they could go extinct.

Something we can do for solution is to spread the word about white tigers going extinct. We could stop using their habitat as a way for us to get Money, Paper,And many many other things.

Because without their habitat they could go extinct. The ways we can save them is 1. Protect their habitat.

2.Stop poachers. 3.Build captivity state ranges.4.Reduce human and tiger conflict.5.Promote tiger friendly policies.6.Monitor tiger numbers.

The

    End

Snow Leopards

Introduction
The reason for Snow Leopard disappearance is that they are being hunted and humans are pushing ever further with their livestock into the snow leopard’s habitat. They are on the endangered species list. There are 4500 to 7500 snow leopards that live in the mountains today. In the past year there were 450 snow leopards that have died because of poaching. This is the reason why snow leopards will disappear in years to come if we don’t do something. Snow leopards ensure that other species, like ibexes and sheep, do not become overpopulated. Poaching Snow leopards has a domino effect on the rest of the ecosystem. If snow leopards disappear the ibex and sheep will die out from starvation after they eat all of the grasslands. Snow leopards are a threatened limiting, factor in their ecosystem. If the presence or absence of a factor limits the growth of the ecosystems elements, it is called a limiting factor.

What is the major problem affecting the ecosystem
Snow Leopards have evolved to live in some of the harshest conditions on Earth. Their white- gray coat spotted with large black rosettes, blends in perfectly with the steep and rocky mountains of Central Asia. With its powerful hind legs, the Snow Leopard can leap up to six times the length of its body. They prey on sheep, ibex, marmots, pikas, and hares, and can be found in 12 different countries. These cats used to be king of the mountains, but their population is slowly dropping.
Currently park rangers are standing by the places where snow leopards are exhibited. Poaching is illegal and these park rangers try to catch and arrest poachers. Park rangers need to keep arresting the people poaching snow leopards. Park rangers are now training local people to be citizen rangers. This is a new program that started in 2017.

The end of the essay

GREY CRAWDADS The grey crawdads are invading the ecosystem in the south. The two main species I will be focusing on are grey crawdads and red crawdads. The grey crawdads are overpopulating the south. The southerners need to work to get rid of the crawdads. The major problem is that grey crawdads are preying on native southern animals homes and are killing them. Fisherman use the crawdads as bait. Sometimes they dump unused crawdads into the waterways. This is a problem. Native water animals have nowhere to live because the crawdads are over taking the area. If people don't care then the whole south will be over runned with grey crawdads. Fishing businesses will lose business. All the animals are dying and the humans are running out of native small fish.Scientists are trying to make a poison to 🤬 the grey crawdads. The poison is working. It's like candy the grey crawdads eat it and they die. The poison kills the grey crawdads. Since grey crawdads take a long time to reproduce, the poison doesn't have to be used often. The poison is working to 🤬 the crawdads. It would help the south out a lot if fishermen didn't dump their unused bait, and if we used the poison regularly.

Pampas deer live in the grasslands of South America. There are three major reasons why Pampas deer are disappearing: over hunting, urban sprawl, and deforestation. Over Hunting is an issue because the Pampas deer are being hunted a lot and they are losing their population. Urban sprawl has been a problem for the Pampas deer because they are putting more and more buildings where they live. Deforestation is a bad thing because the deer eat leaves that have soft stems,so if we dont stop cutting down trees the deer would not be any leaves to eat.

If Pampas deer went extinct the animals that eat the Pampas deer would go hungry and would come into urban areas to eat other things including pets. There could be an increase of attacks on people. Businesses would not make as much money if the Pampas deer went extinct. There are many projects going on to protect the Argentina grassland for the deer.(Yes the projects are working and yes it is affecting.) How we would help the Pampas deer is to put up game cams make laws/legal support. In Missouri we can try to encourage people to not harm the forest and not to mow down the grasslands. As you know now these things are harmful to everything and it will help everyone at the end.

								        Thanks

Emily Thornton Montana Davidson

Global warming

Crack, crash, splash We will be focusing on three different problems, on three different continents that will all lead back to global warming.

Crack, the baby polar bear fell into the deep dark ocean. So, let's get to the real cause of this problem and make a solution. Global Warming is causing the ocean temp. to rise. in turn, ice sheets and glaciers are melting. We have to recycle. We need to recycle because the landfills are causing global warming. In result 500 to 600 polar bears are drowning and dying per year.

Another solution is to make better cars that do not need gas. We need to make cars that take plants and release oxygen into the air. We need less factories. Factories are also causing global warming. The smoke from the factory is making things worse for the polar ice caps.

Now we have to talk about our economic problems. Our government wants to move the polar bears to canada but it will

cost millions. Also, if we do not help the polar bears, the seals will over populate and eat too many salmon. Jobs will be cut people will want salmon. Fishermen won’t be able to make a living. Markets will raise the price of salmon. That is why we need to recycle and use different things for gas.

Crash, imagine thousands of trees falling to the ground. In this section of the article I will be focusing on deforestation in Australia and how it affects the people there. Along with the effects it has on our environment in the United States.

The cause of deforestation is the increased demand for fossil fuels and paper products by consumers. in turn, forcing animals out of there habitat, taking away their food sources and their way of life with no hope of survival.

Deforestation in Australia has been a direct result of global change and the increase in population. the developers in Australia have destroyed the rainforest by harvesting its natural resources and clearing out the forest ground. In an effort to develop and expand their booming population. paving the way for businesses, schools and tourist attractions to thrive all while depleting their natural resources.

when they clear the forest floor, remove rare vegetation, destroy many creatures habitat along with food and water sources --- where does this leave the rest of the world? These affects will eventually devastate our world and its environment. The destruction of the rainforest will drastically increase co2 levels in

our atmosphere eventually leading to poor air quality. Rare plants such as reed will no longer exist along with their ability to produce strong carbons, a renewable energy resource.

Consumers need to be informed and educated on ways in which we can reverse some of the devastating effects our expanding world has created over the past 50 years. Purchase products that are made from recyclables and cloth, raise awareness about how animals are being harmed and in some cases at risk of extinction. Promote planting trees, understand the impact of losing our rainforests, and tell how it affects people around the world.

Splash! The people of South America are splashing and dancing in the oceans of South america. But what they don’t know is La nina is about to move in.

El nina and El nino

La nina and El nino are environmental cycles that take at least 18 months to get rid of, but they can last up to years or decades. They are both dangerous to all sea life and oceans. This is something that happens in normal cycles. But, lately the water has been warming up too much because in increased carbon emission. This has bad effects on seaLife, volcanoes, and weather in North America. Scientist every minute are doing studies and test to find better cures for La nina and El nino, by taking samples to labs and looking at cures.

How is El nino caused

El nino is caused by warmer trade winds changing directions and heating up water that is usually cold. This affects sea life because the sea life is used to being in cold water and it changes to

warm water and that makes them sick. This may also affect polar bears and penguins. Polar bears and penguins live in cold climates and they might get sick by that.

La Nina

La nina does the opposite and drops ocean temperatures. This affects North America’s temperatures and weather. It also kills coral reefs. La nina also push fish somewhere else and affects sea lions. The sea life can’t stand the water changing to warm from cold so that makes them sick or causes death.

                                                     Cause and Effect

La nina and El nino Are getting worse because the carbon going into the air and making it warmer. Then the warmer air warms up the ocean, and this together causes the weather to change. This is why Missouri has wild winters and summers and even violent tornado seasons.

People around the world can make and difference and help this. It’s never too late to speak up.

Graph of DEforestation in australia and picture

By: Margie , Lydia, and chloe
