Lives of teenagers was carefree and there is no illness. During the Japanese Occupation, food become expensive and is not easy for them to afford, there is also not enough food for them to eat so there will be limited food for locals to eat. At that time, rationing occurs, locals have to queue up  for a long time. Food was scarce and teenagers will have not enough to eat, therefore teenager were very skinny at that time. Lives of teenagers were very hard and miserable as they get hungry very soon. Teenagers have to grow foods in their school like, tapiocas  and sweet potato as they need more food for them to eat. Some of the teenagers have to go  out in the jungle to find food."Although food was scarce, somehow or other, we could survive on things that we could lay our hands on. In order to survive, you try to make use of every part of the fruit you ate. For instance, even the skin from a cempedak can be eaten. the seed, which is hard, can be boiled until it becomes soft and edible. You can even eat the shells of groundnuts." This  tells me that teenagers take food as there precious things. It is because that they don't waste any parts of the food. Even though the seed of  cempedak is hard, they find way to cook them.

During the war houses were destroyed by the Japanese as the houses were bombed . As the houses were destroyed there were a shortage of houses and families have to be cramped in a house that they can rent. Some of their hoses were destroyed and have to rent a house or a room to live in . People who still had their house rented them out with high prices and only a few families can rent them.

Mothers would urge their daughters to get married so that they would not be taken away to be comfort women. Teenagers had no money no food and the food provided decreased each time they went to ration for it.
