When Rose Mary tells her to "get right back in the saddle" after she just got home from the hospital due to the serious burns she got while cooking. Rose Mary believes she is teaching Jeannette to not let fear control her. Throughout the book, Jeannette and her sibling couldn’t relay on their parents leading them to learn to be resilient and to persevere through the challenges that came their way.

Rex always had wild ideas and kept things interesting, his unpredictability created both thrilling moments and constant stress for his family, mainly his children. Even though they all had fun moments, the lack of stability took a toll on Jeannette and her siblings, leaving them to constantly adapt to his unreliable behavior.

Jealousy

This quote highlights the theme of jealousy, the jealousy and resentment Rose Mary has towards Jeannette leaving for New York. Instead of being sad about her daughter leaving, Rose Mary admits that she’s upset because she feels stuck in Welch with Rex even though she’s the one who put herself in that situation. Throughout the book Rose Mary tends to complain and prioritizes her own wants and needs over her children’s. This moment in the book was a perfect example of Rose Mary showing the type of mother she is and showing just how jealous she could be of those around her even if they were he children.

This quote represents disappointment because it shows how hard Jeannette tries to believe in her dad, even when he keeps letting her down. At first, she’s completely convinced he’ll change and keep his promises, but the fact that she has to promise herself not to lose faith is a sign that deep down, she knows better. No matter how much she wants to trust him, he keeps proving her wrong, and eventually, she just can’t hold onto that belief anymore. It’s that heartbreaking moment when you realize someone you love isn’t going to change, no matter how much you wish they would.

This quote represents broken promises because it shows how Rex tries to covers up his failures with big gestures. Instead of admitting he can’t afford a real Christmas present, he tries to make it seem like giving Jeannette a star is more meaningful. At first, it sounds sweet, but in reality, it’s just another way to dodge responsibility. He’s always making things sound big and amazing to distract the kids from the fact that he never follows through on his promises like with the glass castle. Over time the children realize to not hold Rex to his promises as they end up being broken promises.

Avoidance

This quote represents the theme of avoidance, Rose Mary believed that everyone deserves some sympathy regardless of the way they treat others. She would use excuse frequently and especially when it came to trying to justify Rex’s alcoholism and overlooking Erma Uncle Stanley’s sexual abuse towards Jeannette and Brian. She hated confrontation and this belief let her avoiding confrontation even if it ment she couldn’t protect her family. As Jeannette grows, she learns to practice empathy while setting boundaries to protect her own well-being something her mother did not do for her and her siblings.
