Guiding Question: Is Tourism in Sentosa Sustainable? 

Hypothesis: 1. Tourists play an important in contributing to environmental sustainability in Sentosa  2. Planning authorities and island partners are successful in implementing sustainable tourism practises in Sentosa. 

Data Collection: Group 1 - Secondary research on Sentosa website (Get inspired) to understand plans in place by SDC for sustainable tourism. Group 2 - Primary data by designing questionnaire to interview tourists (e.g. Likert scale on eco-stewardship behavior) , Data collection sheets (e.g. Frequency counts on use of recycle bins) 

 Possible activities: LR - Do tourists appreciate sustainability measures? HR / Full Geog - Comparison of perspectives (Govt vs business vs tourists). Students assume role of auditor - Environmental infrastructure, Events and programmes. 

Possible locations: Eateries/ Sentosa Express and bus stations

Training students to answer the common exam question - How accurate/reliable is the data collected?

Hypothesis: Sentosa is an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable tourism destination.

Research Qn: How sustainable is tourism in Sentosa?

Purpose: For students to execute their GI skills and experience the pros and cons of their data collection methods

Possible Location: Split a class of students into 6 groups of 5, 2 groups to explore each aspect of sustainability (Env, Economic, Social).

Idea #2 - JC

Hypothesis: The promotion of Sentosa as a sustainable tourism destination is mainly driven by the government.

Research Qn: Is the promotion of Sentosa as a sustainable tourism destination mainly driven by the government?

Data collection: Questionnaires & Interviews with different stakeholders (Tourists, Govt, Businesses)

Purpose: For students to interview the different stakeholders and evaluate their roles in the promotion of Sentosa as a sustainable destination.

Inquiry Question 1: How far has the sustainability initiatives in Sentosa influenced tourists’ behaviour/actions?

Inquiry Question 2: How has the sustainability initiatives in Sentosa affected tourists’ experience in Sentosa?

Students’ Tasks:

1. Create a hypothesis for one of the inquiry questions above. (Examples of hypotheses - ‘Environmental sustainability efforts in Sentosa has been effective in changing tourist behaviour.’ And ‘Environmental sustainability efforts has made a positive impact on tourists’ experience in Sentosa’ and ‘Environmental sustainability efforts has not made a change on tourists’ experience in Sentosa.’)

2. Data collection sequence - start with secondary research, then collect quantitative and qualitative data (primary data collection)

3. Secondary research - students find out the existing sustainability initiatives in Sentosa through a talk conducted by experts and by viewing the Sentosa website. They do a short report on the research done.

4. Primary data collection - Step 1: do a tour of Siloso Beach Resort and gather information on how the hotel carries out sustainability. Interview hotel manager if possible. Step 2: go to Imbiah station and study the area near it where there is a congregation of hotels and attractions. Carry out closed-ended questionnaire in the area to find out tourists opinions and behaviour. Take photographs and annotate sustainable features or practices. Interview small businesses on sustainable practices. Do a participant observation or count of number of people who recycle (station at the recycling bins). Step 3: go to the beach and do a environmental perception survey to understand the impact of tourists on the beach.

5. Possible location: Siloso beach resort, west of imbiah station

6. Reasons for choice of location: hotel cluster and many attraction in walking distance, high footfall, high accessibility

7. Students analyse and process data after the fieldwork

8. Students present findings in presentation format or infographic. Students can share findings with Sentosa.

Hypothesis:

Visitors who are informed about Sentosa’s sustainability initiatives are more likely to adopt sustainable behaviours during their visit.

• teachers can consider splitting students into different groups

Data collection methods:

1. Questionnaire survey +Interview

   Interview businesses and tourists (5 per group) to find out about their carbon footprint and observation of sustainable practices

   • for e.g. businesses if provide resusable/ disposable cutlery/ plastic bags

   • for tourists: mode of transport, accommodation, activities (students to state sampling method used)

   • Possible challenge: businesses limited, so 2-3 per group, not sure if businesses willing to answer

   Count number of visitors at each location for 5 min and compare if more visitor = more negative impacts?

Land use survey / Mental maps to record evidences of places and activities that are likely to have low carbon footprint. Verify the information obtained through secondary research on the website.

Data collection method 2 and purpose:

Questionnaire survey on tourists to find out about they did on the island, and whether they are aware of the sustainability efforts of Sentosa. To verify the effectiveness and reach of Sentosa’s sustainability efforts.
