Critical Analysis of Social Media Behaviour through the Lens of Online Disinhibition Effect by Anika Bushra

Online disinhibition is a common phenomenon that internet users experience. Social media gives us a better leeway of expressing ourselves in a negative manner or a positive manner. While some of us tend to voice our opinions more often than we would face-to-face, while we feel safer to show our creativity to the world on a virtual platform, the darker side of social media and how it makes us disassociate with reality and act our worst selves out is not ignorable. The paper will discuss the toxic online disinhibition effects that social media users experience and demonstrate such as cyberbullying, flaming, deception, and the factors that encourage such behaviour.

Online disinhibition is described as the tendency to display less restraints in human behaviour and act more freely on digital platforms while interacting with other users, compared to how they would behave during face-to-face interactions.

John Suler, a psychologist, explained the phenomenon influenced by six factors - dissociative anonymity, invisibility, asynchronicity, solipsistic introjection, dissociative imagination, and minimization of authority.

He argued that online disinhibition effect can be both positive and negative in nature and consequences, depending on the context and the individuals involved. Positive disinhibition may include authentic self-expression and reinforcing kindness. Whereas, some people may take on the characteristics of toxic disinhibition by engaging in trolling, flaming, or cyberbullying.

This article sums up the negative online disinhibition effect, which is the opposite of positive disinhibition, where a user behaves aggressively and expresses a version of them that is different from their real life selves.

Gould explores the phenomenon of people behaving differently in the virtual realm than they do in real life. She suggests that anonymity, lack of consequences, and the ability to hide behind a screen are all determinants of such behaviour. She further notes that virtual communication lacks the nonverbal cues that help us interpret facial expressions, body language, tone, and intention of the messages in face-to-face interactions.

Gould finally concludes that self-awareness can help us be more mindful of our behaviour with others on online platforms and strive to be kinder individuals on the internet.

The research study will use Diener's (1976) Theory of Deindividuation as the theoretical framework. Deindividuation Theory suggests that internet users lose their individual identity and self-awareness by cause of anonymity behind the screen, and often behaves impulsively and aggressively.

The article discusses waning of self awareness as the loss of ability to reflect on one's own thoughts, feelings and behaviour when they are secure behind virtual anonymity and their actions can go unaccounted for. He linked his arguments up with disinhibition as human beings more often than not ebb away from normal inhibitions on social media platforms and behaves inappropriately.

The authors of this article analyze epistemic envy in the content of "keyboard warriors" through the lens of the psychoanalytic theory of Wilfred Bion. Keyboard warrior is referred to as someone who engages in heated online arguments in the form of comments on social media posts or internet forums with no genuine pursuit of knowledge and understanding. This tendency, or epistemic envy, takes over when people come across knowledge or expertise they do not possess, and feel envious of the individuals hoarding the said knowledge. This leads to the desire to "win" arguments, often by manifesting negative emotions such as anger and aggression in the form of online attacks and harassments directed towards those who possess the knowledge that individual is envious of.

Alice Katharina Pieper discusses the issues of cyberbullying in her article "The insulting Internet: universal access and cyberbullying". She argues that with the increasing prevalence of online communication, the anonymity and distance afforded by the internet enables individuals to engage in bullying behavior without the fear of consequences.

Pieper notes that victims can undergo serious consequences of cyberbullying such as depression, anxiety, and even suicide. She emphasizes the need for increased awareness and education about cyberbullying, as well as effective laws and regulations to prevent and address this problem.

Overall, the author suggests that while digital platforms may be beneficial to those who exhibit positive qualities of self, it also presents certain challenges that must be addressed to ensure that it remains a safe and respectful space for all its users.
