Although a week might seem like a small amount of time for a break, there's a lot that can be done in a week. For example, during my spring break I went to Knott's Berry Farm. One of my favorite parts of Knott's Berry Farm is Berryfest. The Knott's Berry Farm Berryfest is a month long celebration of the boysenberry and they have a bunch of boysenberry themed foods and drinks. Also the roller coasters are super fun, specifically Hangtime and Xcelerator. On Wednesday, I went to Universal Studios Hollywood. One of the unique things about Universal is the Studio Tour, in which you can tour the Universal Studios Backlot where they film movies and TV shows. It's really interesting and also has a couple stops that are kinda like rides. Finally, I went to the mall with my friends on Sunday. It was very nice to be able to spend some time with my friends to cap off the break.

Danger of a Single Story

Powerful countries like America and England which have major publishing power can limit our views by presenting us with characters and settings that have this unrealistic uniformity. The quote "History is written by the victors." truthfully shows us that people with power use that power to control our views on certain subjects. For example, the story of Christopher Columbus was that of incredible exploration and discovery. However, that was written by his contemporaries and friends. It was later discovered that Christopher Columbus was an ignorant murderer who ordered the deaths of an entire tribe of Natives, the Tainos. But, since the losers in the story had died, the only person left to tell it was the winner. And no one wants to write in detail about how their pointless voyage led to the mass genocide of an entire tribe. So, he crafted a story of this expeditionary genius that did nothing wrong and discovered America. Stories are also incredibly powerful and important in their own right. A well-written story can influence a person's viewpoints and lead to an incredible level of literary creativity. However, a "single story" has the exact opposite effect. Rejecting a "single story" is key to having an open mind and an important factor in the diversity of character and setting. For example, in my story, Jason is a drug addict. But, rather than depict him as the stereotypical druggie, I wanted to present someone that was truly human and tried to avoid demonizing his actions and words. Now, if I succeeded or not isn't up to me, but it shows how much a "single story" can simplify a story that would otherwise be complex.

Sonnet #40: Take All My Loves, My Love, Yea Take Them All (Modern English)

Take everything I love, my love; yes, take it all. What do you have then, that you didn’t have before? Not love that you could call true love, my love; all my love was already yours before you took this extra love from me. If you make love to another person instead of accepting my love I can’t blame you, love, because you’re just using my love. But still, you are to blame if you deceive yourself by taking from someone else what you won’t take from me. I forgive that robbery, dear thief, even though you’re stealing from someone so poor. And yet, everyone who loves knows that it’s more hurtful to be wounded by someone one loves than by an enemy. You – gracious and lascivious at the same time, in whom everything bad appears good – may kill me with hurtfulness, but we must not be enemies.

My Take:
Shakespeare's 40th Sonnet is one that describes a story of grief, love, and infidelity. In this sonnet, Shakespeare talks to a woman who he has given all his love. She gladly takes it but never really appreciates it. By the end of the sonnet, the woman ends up going with another man. The ending message is one of peace, saying that he'd rather end the relationship on good terms instead of making an enemy out of his former lover.

This is my favorite poem because of the way it portrays grief. By structuring the story progression around grief and its 5 stages, it makes the story much, much more immersive . It feels like I'm feeling those feelings alongside the narrator and it gives me the ability to better understand the story.
