Within Dear Martin, characters who are part of minorities experience contrasting treatment compared to white people from authoritative figures, as well as regular people. In the beginning of the novel, Justyce experiences abuse specifically from a police officer. He helps his ex-girlfriend, Melo, as she is drunk and attempting to drive. When noticed by a police officer, Justyce is arrested simply because of his race. Although his intentions are to help Melo, the officer assumes he is up to no good because of the racism within the society.

Dear Martin and The Blindside are similar because they both cover instances in which white people are more privileged than black people because of racism. Michael was born in a poor community and had a difficult time because of it. The white characters in the film are extremely wealthy and treated with respect. In Dear Martin, white characters, such as Melo, are treated with more respect than black characters, due to racism within the society.
