Film Projector in 1968

Imelda talked about how having a film projector in her class helped students truly visualize what they were being taught. There were many subjects of interest including visuals for graphs, science and biology. A particular lesson that she remembers, was the lesson about human nature and procreation. Although some of the pictures were uncomfortable for her, she was glad to learn things that she would never learn at home.

Text Books in 1970

Imelda also shared how textbooks were the number one priority in education in the 1970s. Although she only went to school up to the 8th grade, due to financial issues, she remembers all of the great information she learned in textbooks. Similar to the images in the film projectors, textbooks were not only full of information but also great visuals. Although we use textbooks even today, we don't rely on them as much as they did in the 20th century.

Typewriter in the 1978

Although Imelda did not use typewriters in school, she used them much at work. She held a job as a secretary in a doctor's office. She remembers typing patient records and paper filing everything. "The use of new technology would have been much appreciated back then." The filing never ended and prescriptions although handwritten, sometimes required the use of the typewriter as well.

Computers Labs at School 1993

Interviewee: Isai, student in the U.S., 1993

Isai talked about having a technology class in public school during middle school. The technology class offered many learning games in typing and reading. Those games included Oregon Trail and Windows computer games. Isai feels that these computer games and the activities done on computer helped him out tremendously. He also learned to type in a way that helped him with his future career.

Although he very much loved computers, the use of floppy discs were not his favorite. He said it seemed complicated to him to learn how to use them.

Graphing Calculators 1995

Isai remembers not being allowed to use calculators at all times in math class. However, when allowed, he would always get a kick out of how fast the calculator would give him answers. He was good at math, but felt it was important to verify his final answers with calculators.

Dial Up Internet 1996

Dial up internet opened up endless possibilities for Isai and all students in general. Isai remembers doing research projects and having so much information in one webpage. It definitely beat having to look through books and magazines. All information was available with a few clicks. Isai does mention that it took a while for internet access, but when finally connected, it work great. His favorite projects were current events and the use of the internet to get information and references.
