Economy Causes
The crash of the stock market in 1929 was one of the biggest causes of the Great depression. The crash happened on October 29th, 1929 after the crash, stockholders also lost around $40 billion. In 1930 the stock market was able to regain some of what they lost however that wasn't sufficient and this is when the US entered the Great Depression. Bank Failures during the 30's were very common 9,000 banks failed at the time leaving all money that belonged to the people, uninsured and many people lost their savings.

Political Causes
In 1913, there was a Underwood-Simmons Tariff that was being experimented with to lower tariffs however, congress ended this experiment in 1922 with the Emergency Tariff Act. Then in 1922 the Fordney-McCumber Tariff Act raised tariffs through the roof compared to 1913's act. The president adjusted the tariffs by 50% to balance the foreign and domestic cost of production to give a hand to the American farmers. In 1928 Hoover promised higher tariffs to protect the farmers from the competition between the Europeans and then came the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act in 1930. Many protested that the chance of acts to foster protectionism was the culprit of the Great depression but it was very unlikely.
