Jacques Cartier's first voyage was Canada in North America, he went in april on the 20th of 1534. The purpose of the voyage was to find a northwest passage to Asia, as well as to collect goodies such as gold and spices along the way. During that first expedition, he explored the western coast of Newfoundland and the Gulf of St. Lawrence as far as today's Anticosti Island, which Cartier called Assomption. He is also credited with the discovery of what is now known as Prince Edward Island. When Jacques Cartier went on his first voyage he had to face some challenges like the time when his companions had gotten scurvy during one of his voyages. The scurvy had killed 25 of his crew members. When the Iroquois had heard this, they were no longer friendly to Cartier, 35 of his crew members were killed by the Iroquois but there was no war. The natives that Jacques Cartier met were called the Iroquois Nation, Cartier forced Native-American guides to accompany him and headed northwest to Anticosti Island.
