Teachers use interviews to engage students in discussion. This provides teachers an opportunity to delve further into student knowledge and allows students to express their learning uninhibited by standardized tests. It is recommended for teachers to consider Bloom's Taxonomy in their questioning efforts to be able to really measure the depth of student understanding.

Teachers can use observations to help understand a student's knowledge in a certain area. By using this natural, non confrontational way to assess students understanding alleviates the pressure of one-on-one interactions. Teachers can even use observations in the child's dramatic play which allows the child to work on mastering more than just the subject at hand while the assessment is taking place. This should be the first step as deeper assessments are needed for more difficult activities/standards.

Teachers use event sampling to identify a pattern in a child's behavior over time. Through event sampling, a teacher is able to identify problems and start to focus on solutions to create the desired behavior and keep the child on a path to success. A great resource to evaluate this is through the ABC Assessment Plan.

A rating scale is when you use a rubric in order to assess the skill level of your students. This is your end product of your lessons that you teach. A rating scale is necessary because it serves as a checklist that helps students, teachers and even parents that shows the students knowledge/skills they have accomplished. You can use rating scales for behaviors as well as academics.
