This work dominates the Scrovegni Chapel's western wall. The sheer surface area allows Giotto to include huge numbers of supporting figures across the scene surrounding Christ who takes the focus in the centre of the composition. There are twelve apostles who stretch across the centre of the painting, with six either side of Christ. The remaining figures are then symbolically divided into sections above and below, left and right, depending on the whichever judgement has been delivered upon whether the souls depicted will ascend to Heaven or suffer eternal torment in Hell.

Giotto's work commemorating the death of Mary is a tad confusing; seeing as it is told that she ascended into Heaven on the Ascension day. However, in Giotto's interpretation, the Virgin Mary is being laid in her tomb as saints and disciples mourn her passing. In the center of the piece stands Jesus; cradling his mother's spirit, which is rendered as a baby. The dull gold colors draw the eye and capture the viewer's attention.

The overall artwork features scenes from the life of St Francis of Assisi, with his receipt of the Stigmata being the larger piece and from where the overall project received its title. The three items below cover the dream of St Francis supporting a church about to collapse, the pope approving the rule of the Franciscans and across on the right is the saint preaching to birds, to whom God's path should also be followed. The inlaid gold hues makes the essential holy men pop from the piece attracts the viewer to key details within the piece.

This fresco beautifully exemplifies Giotto’s break with Byzantine techniques. He creates a highly emotional story with the combination of elements of traditional Byzantine paintings, such as the dimensional layout and iconography, with his stylized faces showing an emotional response to the death of Christ. The result pulls the viewer into the scene by inviting them to witness the pain and anguish of the Lamentation. The fresco is painted on the North interior wall of the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, Italy.

The two key figures are pictured centrally within this painting. Christ's halo helps us to identify him, whilst Judas is wearing a cloak as he embraces his friend. A struggle appears to be about to occur as other figures in the scene start to jostle and wrestle with each other. Giotto includes a large number of people within the fresco, though only those in the foreground are given any real detail. Long handled torches are lifted into the air as soldiers continue their search for Christ. Others protest about the arrest and this causes quite a commotion to ensue after Judas's act of betrayal after indicating Jesus's identity to the army who surround them. The sky above is darkened, suggesting that they have been searching for some time to find him, underlining his importance. The glaring stares, expressions of anger, shock, and disdain are wrought in this picture.
