During the Graphic/Digital Design workshop I experimented with a range of different shapes to correlate to the given word briefs. I thoroughly enjoyed attempting alternate techniques and imagery. I chose the orange, blue and white colour scheme to emphasise the unique qualities and make certain elements pop. This task was exciting to attempt a new practise and provoked me to think more creatively outside the box.

In this certain set of designs, I attempted to think more literally rather than in just block shapes. I enjoyed thinking about the prompts like ‘random’ and ‘pattern’.

I created these series of monograms based off my own initials during the graphic design workshop. I wanted to incorporate influences of old timely movie title cards for this particular task as I enjoyed their elongated and accentuated shadows. Although I believe these attempts to be successful, I additionally found that experimenting with the lengths and heights of the letters created a unique but eerie effect. There were endless possibilities with these alternative silhouettes/shapes during this project and I heavily enjoyed observing the different patterns and techniques.

I favoured the idea of a motif paired with my initials. I attempted a crow along with the letters on top, and underneath the wings of the image. A sword and a hand were also incorporated with my lettering but I do not believe they were as successful.

This work shows five, 1 minute observations of the live model in willow charcoal, as she changes poses. I like how the lines are soft, but effective in this piece. The body does get lost in these sketches and instead of displaying movement they appear slightly uncoordinated.

I completed five short 1 minute observations of different live drawing poses repeatedly. The layering of these quick sketches gives them a sense of fluidity and movement which I find interesting. Although I achieved the basic silhouette of each pose I would’ve preferred if I completed them slightly quicker so I could get more features in, and make the body more identifiable.

This piece displays 3 five minute studies in willow charcoal. These display the model progressively turning around. My lines and observations are loose in these studies but I believe they are very successful in differentiating the 3 alternate bodies.

This work displays 3, five minute studies of the live model in willow charcoal. I do not believe this piece was as successful as my previous studies. As my lines are too heavy and the body becomes lost in this attempted shading. I still enjoyed pushing myself to immediately start observing without overthinking the small details.

I completed 8 A5 observational drawings of a range of farm animals, utilising ink, oil pastel and collage to create these imaginative hybrids in Christine Blaney’s Illustration workshop. I found applying the ink using cocktail sticks and sponges was quite difficult, but created a beautiful texture. We were encouraged to attempt pieces using only colour, excluding black. I decided on using both a light and dark green contrasted against a vibrant orange background for my observation of a pig. I aimed to be playful with this task therefore I chose on A scribbled effect with some of the backgrounds. I was heavily influenced by photomontage artist, Hannah Höch throughout this workshop as her displaced elements of the body. Her deconstructed technique is something I attempted to use to create A surreal narrative. This is displayed in my observation of A caterpillar. I used found images to replace the caterpillar’s legs with human arms and a small, demon-like mask for its face. Above this sketch I collaged a Chinese doll’s head with an oversized mouth with the saying above, “Boys will be boys.” I additionally used this sentence in my final study of the plastic goat laying face down on the table, with the letters in bold print. This saying was my chosen statement as similarly to Höch’s work, I wanted to incorporate feminist agendas and I believe this disregarding quote suited this study. I throughly enjoyed dissembling elements of found images and experimenting with different placements to emphasise the unusual nature of the task.

I evaluated my previous monogram designs that I completed earlier on in the week and decided on this old-timely/western design. I combined two of my favourite fonts I sketched as I wanted to have a kitschy motif within my design. To do this I created a bite out of the corner of the letter with a prominent tooth bulging out. I really like the depth the over exaggerated shadow gives to my initial. I struggled with differentiating the letter and the shadow within the lino, therefore I incorporated some slight cross hatching to make the monogram appear more profound. I personally believe this vibrant red print was the most successful out of the batch as it’s even coverage makes the piece pop against it’s background.

I attempted a slight ombré effect using my lino block. I began to roll half of the print with blue ink, and the other half with yellow. As I wanted an even coverage i went over both colours slightly and this caused them to bleed into eachother, creating a murky green. As of this I do not believe this specific print was successful.

I like how this bold blue appears paired with my lino print, but the slight fading in the centre of the design takes away the appearance of the print.

I believe this shade of yellow paired with my lino print would have been more suited to a darker background. Printing onto white paper with this vibrant of a yellow makes the print appear washed out and lost.

Before carving out my design into the lino, I wanted to ensure my finalised monogram was perfectly imprinted onto the block. To ensure this I began sketching the design onto tracing paper using a ruler and pencil. I continued to flip the design onto the lino block and heavily overline my letter to transfer it over.

For our games design session with Mark Canon, we attempted to create an exciting alien based board game that brings people together. UFO-OutofHere! is a galactic spin on the beloved snakes and ladders, but your goal is to get back to earth. You begin abducted on the alien’s home planet and attempt to progress your way through the twists and turns to arrive back to home. As you make your journey, obstacles like UFO’s will attempt to drag you back down to the occupied planet. Whilst portals speed up your transport time by zapping you up multiple spaces.

My designated role within the group was to create the characters for the board, whilst also contributing to the overall idea. I designed 4 humans and a space dog using masking tape and different collage elements. I believe these designs were received well when we all tested out eachother’s games. I heavily enjoyed completing this workshop as it allowed for us to test and try out other peoples ideas, seeing what works and what doesn’t.

This is our original ideas mind map, where we experimented with our scooter prototype. We incorporated disco balls, streamers and lights to make the dancing theme consistent. Our previous app composition was going to be a 10k step goal, but we decided on targeted it to a older audience for the social aspect.

For our chosen exercise app, we designed a jester/scooter service. We wanted to consider the depression and loneliness rate experienced by the older population, especially coming up to the holidays. Our app encourages people to get out and about by meeting a jester for a boogie! Not only does this increase socialisation for the elderly but additionally provides a fun way to exercise. As an app user you will be notified of jesters within your vicinity and have the option to book a slot. The jester will scooter halfway to your chosen location and you can meet them there. ‘Jesta Dance’ makes exercise fun raising the morale for everyone!

For the Figma project I created 18 designs based on my graphic design workshop ideas. I used the given prompts to sketch out some shapes and simplified these designs in the Figma application. I really enjoyed photographing Niamh around the Foundation space, experimenting with different elements of the building. Recently I have been working with green/blue like tones contrasted with a deep red. These lockers were ideal to pair these two colours together and result in creating an interesting image.

Performance Art

For this specific arrangement, I wanted to play with colour grouping contrasted amongst the white walls with little movement. But in the end there was a slight arm waver. Although originally I wanted it to be a still piece, I found this effect eerie and almost other worldly. The colours of all our objects were of an extremely similar shade of yellow, which appeared brightly on camera. I believe this shot was the most successful out of the clips, I am extremely happy with the result.

We wanted to use the object of a plastic cow, paired with the sound of a bell for this clip. Using this to create a juxtaposition on both life forms, the cow deemed lesser than the other by society. The irregular ringing of the bell as she crawls beside the cow added a uncanny atmosphere.

During our Fine Art Drawing workshop, I completed a series of charcoal drawings focused on a still life arrangement. Creating a study from memory, with my non dominant hand and with multiple pencils held together to create unnerving double exposure effect. I found these studies to be quite difficult as this task was far out of my comfort zone, but allowed me to be confident in making liminal lines during a quick time frame.

I wanted to simplify my collage reference in this piece by blocking out aspects with a range of different blues. Although I used a predominantly blue palette, I attempted to make an effort to display the deep orange under painting I started off with. I do not believe this effort worked as it makes the piece appear slightly unfinished. The background displays uneven and messy. I do like how the alternate shades of blue pop on my chosen objects and the sense of depth it gives to the overall work.

For this task I wanted to encapsulate something that directly correlates to my own self perception, incorporating a slight humorous tone. Originally I intended on using an orange troll to represent myself on the accessories but I believe it becomes lost within the red colour scheme and doesn’t do the object justice. Instead I chose to use a polaroid of my eye collaged into a doll-like figure. The hand lingering over my head leads directly back to my catholic upbringing, with both the Virgin Mary and Crucifix creating the scene. The broach featuring the enlarged horse head displays a section of my mother’s diary on the week I was born with another feature of the Virgin Mary. I wanted to use spider imagery within this work as a t shirt I wear quite often features a hyper realistic spider, therefore I collaged the small man peeping out of a sea shell with the un proportioned bug crawling up the side. This was my favourite project to complete in the module as I heavily enjoy creating intricate details within my work, I believe this result was very successful.

Throughout the ‘Jewellery’ workshop I developed this specific dynamic design. I wanted something that appeared loose and moveable, but also could hold a shape. I found that creating triangular folds in paper and cutting out the flat elements created this spiked effect that could be fluctuated with ease. I played around with both coloured paper and paper on the thinner side, experimenting with what works best. Compressing the edges to make intricate shapes.

My Shirt Design

I wanted to focus on childhood tooth decay for my shirt design. I chose a range of oranges to sew the hand to symbolise the culprit, Sunny D. I wanted to create a dropping effect, almost as the teeth were falling out of grasp. With the title ‘Suga’ on the opposing side. I enjoyed creating the finer details, especially in the hand element, but I am not happy with the final result as the colours do not compliment each other well.
