Ponyboy’s motivation is to impress the gang and Cherry. He needs to make a good impression since he is the youngest in the gang. Ponyboy stood up for himself against Dally. This impressed Cherry at the movies, which gave Ponyboy a good impression. Cherry even let Ponyboy sit next to her at the movies. She emphasized her impression for Ponyboy by saying, "Y'all sit up here with us. You can protect us” (Page 27). Cherry felt secure and safe when Ponyboy was around from his brave actions actions against Dally. Another incident that portrayed Ponyboy’s motivation was when he wanted to participate in the rumble, impressing the gang with his courage.

Ponyboy’s strength is his courage. He displayed his courageous nature when he saved the people trapped in the burning church. Ponyboy said to the families of the trapped people, “Don’t worry, I’ll get them” (Page 78). Ponyboy cared and worried about the people in the trapped church. A second event that portrayed his courage was when he was approached by the Socs at the gas station. Ponyboy smashed two bottles, scaring the Socs away and threatening to ¨split¨ them. Ponyboy’s courage represents a strong and brave character.

Ponyboy's flaw is his impulsive actions. One event that showed his impulsive actions was when his brother Dally slapped him and Ponyboy just ran out of the house without expressing his thoughts. This caused him to involuntarily run away to parking lot with Johnny, where they were in a dangerous situation with the Socs. Ponyboy showed his impulsive actions by saying, ¨Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door” (Page 44). This was the first time that Darry slapped Ponyboy, which surprised Ponyboy. The second event that portrayed Ponyboy’s flaw was when he fought against the Socs at the rumble which put his safety in danger. Ponyboy’s flaw of having impulsive actions put his life in danger multiple times.

Ponyboy is the protagonist of the story because he is the central person of the story. Ponyboy is a dynamic character because he changed from being shy and kind to tough. He changed when Johnny Cain died, which taught him to be brave to stand up for himself and the gang. He also changed when Darry slapped him. Darry talked to Ponyboy about their relationship, "No more fights. Okay, Ponyboy" (Page 146). This incident taught him to stick with his family because he and his brothers were all they had left. Ponyboy was a dynamic character throughout the story, changing throughout time.
