by: L. Garza
In self-directed learning (SDL), the individual takes the initiative and the responsibility for what occurs. Individuals select, manage, and assess their own learning activities, which can be pursued at any time, in any place, through any means, at any age. In schools, teachers can work toward SDL a stage at a time. (selfdirectedlearning.com)

http://selfdirectedlearning.com/

(Amanda Kocher (Bixel)
In science, self-directed learning can be implemented using problem-based learning. Rather than the "recipe" labs that have predetermined results, students are given open ended questions in which they design something new to solve a problem, or test a range of variables in order to come to a conclusion about a real world problem. The group or individual learner is applying prior knowledge and working with their peers to discuss and find solutions.

http://www.nais.org/Magazines-Newsletters/ISMagazine/Pages/SelfDirected-Learning.aspx

This is an interesting perspective from both the teachers and the students with Summit Public Schools where the educational focus has changed. The ball is placed in the court of the students to make the decisions and grow within their own learning experience. An important aspect of the learning is the reflection on the process of learning where students are able to reflect either step by step or holistically in their learning.
