Individuals select, manage, and assess their own learning activities, which can be pursued at any time, in any place, through any means, at any age. In science, self-directed learning can be implemented using problem-based learning. Rather than the "recipe" labs that have predetermined results, students are given open ended questions in which they design something new to solve a problem, or test a range of variables in order to come to a conclusion about a real world problem. The group or individual learner is applying prior knowledge and working with their peers to discuss and find solutions.
