Since plastic is an important resource, many companies, countries, etc have found ways to (re)use it for different purposes. The first ever plastic water bottle was made in 1947 but was expensive due to the material used to make it. The water bottle was later reduced in price in 1950 because polyethylene was introduced and was a cheaper alternative than the previous bottles. In 1994 Pepsi was test-marketing Aquafina (brand of bottled water) and a few years later had a marketing campaign.

In a study scientists have found that we ingest microplastic in plastic packaged food items when we eat them which could lead to a stop in hormone production. Fish eat the plastic in the ocean causing them to possibly die, but when we eat the fish, we’re basically eating plastic and fish which could also lead to some bad health problems. The more we produce and use plastic, the more landfills and areas of the world will become polluted and eventually uninhabitable, so we need to cut down on plastic production.

Although recycling is good and very important it can be bad in some ways. If we recycle the same piece of plastic, everytime we recycle that piece it will become more toxic. Many people think that when they put their stuff in the recycling bin it will be recycled but it’s mainly ending up in landfills whether you like it or not. Every year about 1.1 million marine animals are killed because of plastic pollution washing into the ocean.

Since many people aren’t recycling but insteading throwing the plastic away, companies have to make more because there isn’t any to repurpose (reuse). About $2.5 trillion are lost every year to marine plastic pollution because plastic isn’t being reused causing more to be made and more money to spend. China’s monthly average of plastic produced is about 6-8 million metric tons making it the leader in plastic production.

Don’t use plastic water bottles, instead use metal or reusable bottles so you don’t have to keep buying more bottles for more water. Since lots of people go to stores, supermarkets, etc, having reusable grocery bags available could have a major impact on pollution. Everyone might use it since it’s good for the environment and serves the same purpose as non reusable grocery bags. Don’t use plastic utensils (fork, knife spoon) because they are thrown away and only used once compared to metal spoons that last longer.
