As I have been reading the book "Out of My Mind", I am curious about how the Medi-Talker could effect Melody's life. But more importantly, will her parents actually allow her to get this new computer? Her parents already spend so much money on Melody for wheelchairs and doctors visits. They have always wanted whatever was best for Melody but will they have the money for this computer? If she were to get the computer it could change so much in her life. She can finally decide what she wants to wear and can share her opinions. This Medi-Talker would change her life so much, and for the better.

While reading my up stander book I have made many connections. Although, one big connection I made was between Melody and myself. In the beginning of the book Melody tells a story from she was younger. She had been craving a burger and a shake but was unable to her Dad. She tried everything to let him know what she wanted but he just ended up making her some noodle instead. I have personally felt a similar way when I was younger. Sometimes I had trouble communicated things I wanted because I was extremely shy, this also would make me feel super frustrated.

One conclusion I am drawing about the events in the book is that Melody's life could actually get a lot better. Even if she is 11 years old and has never taken one step or spoken one word, she has so many good things going for her. She was lucky enough to actually go to school. Then after many years of not learning anything she has finally got the chance to learn new things. Not only has her education improved but now she also finally has the chance to make new friends with the help of the Medi-Talker. This really shows that no matter how low life might get, things will eventually improve.

Within the first few pages of reading the book it was quite easy for me to visualize what Melody looks like by what quotes "They'd see a girl with dark brown eyes that are full of curiosity. But one of them is slightly out of wack. Her head wobbles a little. Sometimes she drools." With the help of this passage I can imagine Melody throughout the rest of the book sitting in her wheelchair, only able to flail around her arms and legs. This passage set a picture in my mind for the rest of the book and was very helpful. This passage also helped me understand some of the difficulties that Melody has to face on a daily basis.

Melody, the main character, makes changes a lot throughout the book. Near the beginning of the book Melody starts off very nervous and not confident. She is nervous about being in an actual classroom with other kids that are "normal." But then as the book progresses she gains more confidence. On page number 267, Melody is planning not to go to school after her quiz team abandoned her. Although, she quickly changes her mind saying quote, "I was not going to sit at home like a kicked-around puppy." Even though her heart was crushed she went to school confidently.

The theme of the book "Out of My Mind" is to never give up no matter how much you are suffering. Melody struggles in her everyday life to communicate with her friends and family. She also struggles to move her body with control or how she wants it to. Although, her family supports her and she goes to school and keeps living everyday as best as she can. Even when Melody starts to get bullied she gains her confidence and continues fighting and enjoying everyday. Melody gave up only once for a short time and then she finds her confidence and continues learning.

There were many parts in the book that lead to large plot developments., although some were larger than others. The first one, was when Melody started going to normal kid classes. She then finally got the chance to make new friends and learn more things other than just simple math and spelling. The second large plot development, was when Melody got her Medi-Talker. This was by far the largest plot development and helped Melody a lot. She now had the chance to talk will other people and express her feelings for once. The third plot development was when Melody made the quiz team and got to compete. Melody drew the attention of a lot of people at the competition. She also gained a lot of confidence and got the chance to go to finals with all her friends. Lastly, the fourth development was when Melody's mom accidentally ran over her little sister, Penny. This made Melody realize a lot of different things and serves as a wake up call for her.

As I was reading my up stander book I found that the author's craft/styles was very helpful and a tiny bit confusing. Throughout the book the author seemed to jump back and forth between past and present. This helped me understand some of the problem Melody has been struggling with her entire life. Although, at some points it got confusing of if it was the past or present. Otherwise, this was extremely helpful and taught me a lot about her personality, and how she looked.

My opinion of the book "Out of My Mind" is quite positive. I find that the book is very well written and the story line is intriguing. Not only that but the entire book really shows me how lucky I am to be able to do things I find super simple unlike Melody. I am able to eat by myself, dress myself, and talk with all my friends and family. Melody however, has to be dressed and fed by her parents and can only use the Medi-Talker and her board to communicate. This book really shows me how lucky I am in my everyday life. Sometimes I worry about what I am going to wear, if I will finish my homework in time, or if my friend is available to hang out. Meanwhile Melody would be worrying about things I never have worried about. For example, she worries about if she is going to get food or drool all over her shirt, if her parents are going to remember to feed her, or if its going to rain and she can't bring her Medi-Talker.
