The speaker describes a "noiseless patient spider" that "mark'd how to explore the vacant vast surrounding" and it "launch'd forth filament, filament, filament out of itself." The speaker uses the spider as a symbol for his soul, which he elaborates further in the second stanza. The string is the connections the soul tries to have with what is around it.
