Are there any symbols? What do they mean? Are they universal symbols or do they arise from the context of this poem?

The main symbol in "The Noiseless Patient Spider" is the spider and the filaments it shoots out. The speaker describes a "noiseless patient spider" that "mark'd how to explore the vacant vast surrounding" and it "launch'd forth filament, filament, filament out of itself." The speaker uses the spider as a symbol for his soul, which he elaborates further in the second stanza. The string is the connections the soul tries to have with what is around it. The symbol seems only arrive out of context in this poem.

What is the poem’s tone? Which words reveal this tone?

The poem's tone is very melancholy and hopeless. "Ceaselessly musing,----seeking the spheres to connect them" The spider is desperate to connect with someone but isn't able to find anyone. As a result, the spider is lonely. "measureless oceans of space" This can emphasize how lonely the speaker is feeling.

What images does the poet use? How do the images relate to one another? Do these images form a unified pattern (a motif) throughout the poem?

The two main images that the poet uses in "A noiseless Patient Spider" are a spider throwing it's webs around an vacant space, and a soul wondering trying to seeking the spheres to connect them [it's surroundings]." The poet uses the two distinct images to have a very similar meaning. Both of them are trying to connect with the things around them, and in this way, the spider serves as a metaphor for the second image.

What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea.

The overall theme of the poem is on the helpless feeling of loneliness. "Till the gossamer thread you fling catch somewhere, O my soul" In the poem, the spider attempts to link itself with something but unfortunately it fails. In relation the speaker feels as if he isn't able to connect with anyone, leaving him with the feeling of loneliness.
