Bob Dylan is an American singer-songwriter who's commonly known for Blues and his phenomenal talent for songwriting.

His extremely clever and witty use of lyrics and phrasing is a perfect representation on how just because you can't sing necessarily well, doesn't mean you cant find other ways of impactful vocalisation.

An example of these powerful techniques are in one of my favourite albums 'Bob Dylan Blood On The Tracks'

RadioHead

Radiohead is a Rock band from Abingdon England, founded by Thom Yorke, Ed O'Brain, Philip Selway, and brothers Colin and Jonny Greenwood.

With their beautiful use of electronic composure on multiple instruments, sounds, layers, harmonies and complex poetic lyricism, they have been a source of inspiration for me for as long as I can remember. Starting out as a bunch of bored school boys to becoming world renowned artists. They are an amazing source of inspiration and musical influence.

Woody Guthrie

Woody Guthrie spent the greater part of his life writing songs as commentaries of the emerging political climate of North America. He lived on west and east coasts of the continent, served in WWII and became a closet Communist’ that clearly influenced his songs. It is known that Bob Dylan was greatly influenced by Guthrie's mannerisms, accent and poses and the use of politics in cleaver lyrics, with his genre bending tastes from Blues, folk, country and more. 'More than any other of Woody's acolytes, Dylan grasped the totality of Guthrie's vision.' (Carney, 2018).

Hank Williams

Hank Williams was an American singer songwriter whose genres lied in blues, western and country music. Also having beautifully poetic lyrics in his songs that has influenced many artists over the years. He suffered battles with injuries and alcoholism causing him problems most of his life making it hard to stay employed, along with his band members being drafted for WWII. According to Bob Dylan He says "Hanks recorded songs were the archetype rules of poetic songwriting" “And that sort of introduced me to the guitar. And once I had the guitar, nothing else was ever a problem.” The impact on his life was incalculable.' (greenie, 2024)(Taylor,2022)

Robert Johnson

Robert Johnson was an American Blues musician and songwriter who's guitar skills, singing and songwriting has influenced many generations of musicians. Having little to no public recognition while he lived, Johnson got most of his fame after death. His techniques are known to have greatly influenced Bob Dylan, such involve complex finger picking on open string tuning and emotionally complex lyrics ranging from love and betrayal to personal discovery and finding fulfilment in life. Dylan says quote “From the first note the vibrations from the loudspeaker made my hair stand up. The stabbing sounds from the guitar could almost break a window. When Johnson started singing, he seemed like a guy who could have sprung from the head of Zeus in full armour." (Chronicles: volume one, 2004)(Starkey, 2022)

Pixies

The Pixies are a very well known American alternative rock band formed of dynamic shifts of loud-quiet-loud song structure with lyrics based around quite 'forbidden' topics such as incest, Biblical violence, extraterrestrials and so on. Their sound draws on many different genres of rock and kind of blends them all together. You can see where they have influenced other musicians with their 'out of pocket' topics of lyricism and abstract songwriting structures. 'Radiohead guitarist Ed O’Brien said they just happened to catch a wave of popularity for Pixies-inspired songs with quiet verses and loud choruses like Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Though “Creep” wasn’t an immediate success, it eventually caught on.' (Donovan, 2024)

Talking Heads

Talking heads are known for a wide range of genres and stage presence, the American new wave, avant funk, experimental art rock band are one of the best unique examples of idiot genius I've ever heard in music. David Byrnes songwriting being a mixture of off-beat rhythms, unheard of melodies and interesting song structures truely gives the band its own sound. Talking Heads are also known for where Radiohead got they're name: 'They eventually settled on Radiohead, borrowed from a forgettable, reggae-flecked song on Talking Heads’ 1986 album True Stories. “Radiohead sums up all these things about receiving stuff,” Yorke later enthused. “It’s about the way you take information in, the way you respond to the environment you’re put in.” (Doyle, 2008)

R.E.M

R.E.M. was among one of the first American alternative rock bands formed in the 1980's with their use of vocal quality, guitar style obscure lyrics and stage presence was a clear influence of many artists at the time.

Artists such as Radiohead Particularly loved the jangly, melodic style that was Peter Buck's influence in R.E.M.

and in the earlier stages of Radiohead's development, they were scared of sounding too much like R.E.M. (Frickle, 2011) (Doyle, 2008)
