There was a sports playing game called decathlon, where the athlete was supposed to complete the tasks by achieveing records. like for example in order to complete the high jump the student must get badges or complete modules. Or in pedagogical pshicology, badges with colours (red, yellow and green - visual arts) or shapes (star, moon and rock- digital competences) are used as a grading system to distiguish behaviors and reward achievments. The fire, water and wind game as well to make students compete and use it as a grading system (fire breaks the wind, Water wins the fire, and the wind wins the water) the game is to distiguishe between similar grades and make the students have fun.

Always cheating with players is positive. The teacher understands when the best monte has come to stop the game. Or during the game two players can be in equal conditions and result and the teacher shows the best of one's competitive score, this always without disrupting the pupil's.

I don't participate in the actual grading, but I have a grading chart for mandatory reading. It gives me feedback on student's reading preferences.
I also evaluate my libraries' attendance where I statistically generate the most attending class (I draw out percentage according to attendance and class size). At the end of a month I put a sticky-note on the classroom door and declare a class "My reading heroes".

We could have a scoring system where each unit can bring you a certain amount of points. If you at the end of the year have collected more than 90% of all points you get grade A, and so on for other grade. For each unit we can say, e.g.: homework – maximum x points, big test – maximum x points, oral exam – maximum x points, … Students could track their progress and collect points. A sort of a board could be placed in classroom for students to follow their progress.

A first attempt would be to qualify through applications such as kahoot (with one attempt only for each question).
Another way would be to use questionnaires of multiple answers valid towards different routes according to the election but it seems to me that it is a difficult work to elaborate.
I also think about the evaluation of their own creations: evaluation by their co-workers, by themselves and by the teacher.

It seems to me that there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to gamifying the grading system in class. I sometimes use the exit ticket idea. I provide my students with an exit ticket at the end of the class containing information about the goals of the lesson. They self-evaluate their own performance and let me know whether I have achieved my initial goals. In the following lesson, we usually comment these tickects if feedback is needed. So, it´s a great way to revise what is just needed, as well.

I do not want to advertise, but I must say that I use Classdojo. I am very satisfied, it works perfectly. There I have my positive and negative points for students. Often, students have day without any homework, or we go for a walk, or make a picnic in our school garden when the weather is fine. When I asked my 13 years old daughter what she think about this, she said that that is impossible. “I can not imagine how something like that can be a game! It isn’t fun at all!”
But if exam itself can be performed through playing the game with levels in accordance with grades, maybe that can be fun after all.
Playing kahoot quizzes can be also fun and result can be a grade, but only if it's not happening often. I noticed that if I use any kind of online tools for assessment eventually it becomes boring and not so fun for the students anymore.

For me grading is grading, you can sugar coated all you want, but at the end of the day it's still grading.
A colleague of mine uses bonus questions on tests, hard questions - if you solve them you can win extra points and up your grade, this reduces anxiety on the written tests a bit, at least this is what I find to be the case.

I have used observation and kept anecdotal notes, used check-lists, and collected portfolios of pupil's work. I have used stickers, points, stars, badges, charts, quizzes and, more recently, on line games (like Kahoot and Quizzlet) in order to motivate my pupils, give them feedback and to formatively track their progress. However, I would never use games as the only means of assessment. Formal summative evaluation and tests are still a necessary part of determining a pupil's mark or grade since this is the basis of our educational system and it directly impacts on the child's future.

I've read all the comments with great interest. I do sometimes use digital tests / games like quizizz and consider the results - among many other results - when grading. Kahoot is for fun or practising only. But I'm not sure if grading system can be too much gamified - there are some good comments on this issues here. Is grading something you can "play" with? Badges is a good way of encouraging children but you can also give them a list to choose from, or add a value to each reward. That way, students have to save their tickets, cards, etc., in order to choose a good reward. Here are a few reward examples:

Pick a game at recess
Sit with a friend
Teach the class a favorite game
Take a homework pass
Be the teacher’s helper for the day
Draw on the chalkboard
Choose any class job for the week
Use the teacher’s chair
Take home a class game for a night
Do half of an assignment

It’ a very interesting challenge. I often use games in my classroom but I have never thought of gaming the daily school routine and the grading system by using the same mechanisms of games. The question of gaming the grading system is much more than giving badges or medals to children. This is important but not enough. My proposal is to find a way of grading in which are involved three kinds of relationship and negotiations: student - teacher; student - student ( in pair, or in small or big group); self-evaluation of the student on himself. First they should decide a goal and the criteria which are useful for recognizing if the goal has been achieved. Children performances are evaluated inside the three mentioned groups. Every groups has to argue about the given judgement. One should give an evaluation to the individual student and to the group to which one belongs, so that every student could realise the responsability he has towards himself and the group to which he belongs. I could develope this idea in my future learning scenario.

Since I work in junior high schools, I think that the grading system should remain as it is. Badges, stars, stickers are for younger kids. What I have personally done to gamify assessment was to use Edmodo and track my students’ progress. Each time my students completed an activity or a quiz I had assigned to them, I rewarded them with a badge through the platform. This was something like a game for them and some of the students often asked me to assign more tasks so that they would have the chance to obtain more badges. I sometimes gave them badges for positive behaviour in class to convey the meaning that behaviour mattered to me as a teacher and I assessed it, as well.

An example of gamification of grading behavior is Class Shop. A Star Chart is needed. Each day pupils could earn five stars, and at the and of the week 25 stars. Level 1 is between 21 and 25 stars, level 2 is 16-20 stars, level 3 is 11-15 stars, level 4 is 6-10 stars, level 5 is 1-5 stars. Level 1,2 and 3 have some privileges, the stars are changed in paper money, and they can buy from the class shop school items, or rewards. I think that the formal summative evaluation and tests are still a pillar of determining a grade, since this is the basis of our educational system. The 'gamify grading’ is probably our future, but for now, I think we (teachers) need to combine different style of evaluation and keep in mind the larger picture of every single child.

When I need a evaluation I build rubrics/check list to define levels of achievement and use them at the end of each class so students can self-assess and determine in which level they are. In this way I’m ‘gamifying' the grading system but also the formative assessment. Sometimes I ask my students to put themselves in teachers' shoes and how they would assess their work (we literally, change our roles: I go and sit with the kids, on the other side in front of us, is a student explaining and acting like a teacher); in this way I try to make them think about the triggers so that they become more motivated.

I tried with the badges and emoticons and I saw that a lot of my students love to see their achievements in our classroom (just 2 or 3 of them wasn’t happy about them - also a lot depend on the age of the kids). We created the list with the all students names and I add them badges when they receive good result in the game. For some activities I give them also diplomas.

It’s also fun to work with 'Kahoot'. Students like it and me too because grading is transparent.

This is what we played with 10 year olds last year: I made the Total Points system work within a percentage grading system. Pupils and I agreed the following weighted grading categories for Math classes:

Tests – 45%
Quizzes – 30%
Homework -15%
Participation -10%

A quiz is worth 15% less then a test; a test is worth 4.5 times more than participation. I could have easily just made tests 450xp, quizzes 300xp, etc., but those numbers aren’t big enough. You want your xp system to use big numbers because 1000xp is more fun to earn then 10xp. I use this system:

Epic Quests (Tests) – 1000xp
Heroic Quests (Quizzes) – 500xp
Side Quests (Hw) – 400xp
Social Quests (Part/Disc) – 300xp

You’ll notice, I also changed the names of the categories to better reflect what one might find in a video game. For what it’s worth, I’ve had many students tell me that the renaming of the categories has cut down on their anxiety. Questing is fun, while working is not, they say. An Epic Quest is something to be defeated, while a Test is something to be feared, or so I’ve been told.

It's important use different types of grading because that can motivate more learners. In my opinion there are some options how improve grading system: breaking the materials in smaller parts and giving feedback immediately,

giving oportunities to do something in a personal ways (that learners can sometimes choose in which way they want to express their knowledge,)
and maybe giving oportunities for evaluate work by yourself with defined criteria.

For motivating my students I use different types of grading. One of them is medal which is written the name of the student, then certificate or diploma. I also prepare for them colorful lockets. My pupils love all sorts of games, and of course, they really like the winners to be announced. I use tablets and some apps where they do our curricula through games and they always get the results. I still haven't graded them for their games/tasks on tablets, and this is a great way of helping me going in that direction... I could give marks for every group of tasks they do because I can see the score they do. They usually work in pairs, but, for grading, I could just quiz them individually when they finish. I haven't really thought of that , before this module, thank you!! I use games only as a part of my lessons, but not when I grade them, now that I've read what other colleagues say and their experience, I'll definitely try the same.

Well, I've used alternative methods for grading - self grading, peer grading, Quizlet, Kahoot... But I think I'll never exclude the traditional grading - test scores etc., as the other methods are not considered objective - from both students and parents.
Thanks to this course I learned and loved the idea of the Badges Board, which I think I'll use in my classroom soon .

The grades must stay for higher reasons – pass to the next level or go to the university. Once I had a lesson when I gave grades to whole class. I prepared 30 questions (about the theme we studied), I chose (accidently from the registrator) one membre from the pair (the chosen one with the student he sits with). Pair by pair answered the questions, five questions in five rounds. If they knew, they got plus. At the end, if they had five pluses, they got 5 (the highest grade in Croatia) and so on: 4 four four pluses, 3 for three pluses. It was interesting for them and for me. I also use Kahoot created by myself. But there are other ways too. For example, I could ask my students to make a video or a poster about the certain content and we would evaluate it in the classroom, all together.

The prizes of the games could be points. Then we could set a scale for the points according to the grading system, for example: 0-49 points (level 2); 50-69 points (level 3); 70-89 points (level 4); 90-100 points (level 5). I make challenges for the 5 workgroups, I have in class, to complete as a team. I use Kahoot and Classdojo.
I award students with all sort of points: good work, math genius, good Portuguese, excellent work, artistic… When they reach 500 and 1000 points or when they do a nice job or have a good behavior i give them the possibility to choose prizes and reward cards. Once a week in philosophy with kids I give them stickers for attention, critical thinking, argumentation…

Nevertheless I think i could use more kahoots, badges, a wall of fame for the dojo leader to engage students even more and somehow lighten the pressure some feel about the grading process.

It is important thing to give immediate feedback, not just a formative written comment. The gamification at school could be done by badges, stickers, certificates. ‘Stars of the week’ works well for my pupils. We are happy to have our ‘Eco Reward Jar’ – every day students put a plastick bottle caps in a big jar – for good behavior, helping hands, no problems J day. When a jar is full we put all caps in a big heart shaped box in the city center to help buying Intensive care nursery for premature babies.

I think it's easier at Primary Level but as others have said a system of stamps or stickers but maybe incorporating a points system (Specific to each child's goals) based on a rubric might be achievable. For younger ones, I have used picture cards to test their vocabulary, for some groups task sentences read by a pair, testing prepositions (e.g. "Walk from the door towards the window.", "Walk through the wall.") 1 point per each successful reaction. Digital pupil's materials from our book publisher can also be used to follow how much each pupil do of the exercises and how do they do. While the pupils are acting roles in a play or playing a game I can evaluate their use of English. But I still need to develop gamifying in the grading a lot. We still have many written tests, even though less and less. Badges might be nice!

This was a fun activity for me to think about as I really like games. Maybe grades could be seen as XP in game that you need in order to advance to a higher level or maybe tests could be called quests and each grade would be a house for example House of knights, and by gaining better grade ( XP) you would advance to a higher House.

There are various activities which can result in a grade. Of course, the easiest thing is to award the winner of a certain game with an A, but how would you grade the others?
The simplest solution here is forming online quizzes, which the students can solve in-class, and you immediately have the rank. This is not an actual game, but the children find it more interesting than the regular tests, since they are done on their tablets.

Widely suggested here on-line quizzez would do in my opinion. A great idea mentioned by someone in here is to let the students grade each other for their work -but I would say anonymosly and only with elder students.
Digital badges sound nice but for the very young learners will not be that effective -they need something they can see/touch/admire and take home to show mummy and daddy. I see a lot of fantastic ideas in your posts guys! I hope you do not mind I will try to implement some of them :)

I honestly can't see how I could gamify standardised tests, but what I do is to incorporate prizes, badges or emoticons for revision activities such as vocabulary competitions, for example.
Giving the students feedbak in differernt colours according to the type of mistake they've made is a kind of problem-solving activity that they appreciate, especially because it comes with the opportunity to redo the task

With my younger students, I use flashcards, online Tinycards and regular tests to track their progress.
When they are very young, and cannot read or write, I draw them a smiley or put a sticker or stamp on their work.
With my older ones, I use different tests, Kahoot and Moodle tasks and tests.

It is true that the classic grading system is really boring and gives no motivation to many students. When I was a student, my teacher had a great idea! We worked in small teams and we had given names of animals (for exampe we were "the dolphins"). Through several activities we won stars and the team who first reached 10 stars was "the team of the month". I found it very interesting and maybe through creative changes, it would be a good idea for a more challenging and funny grading system.

I don't really know how to do that. It is difficult to gamify with
standardised tests at the end of the academic year.
What I do is give them feedback and include some smiles or stickers, but this is not the idea of gamification.

It feels a bit hard to imagine that I could gamify the whole grading system but maybe some parts of it could work e.g. with badges. I also thought of designing the contents of a course so that it would contain different paths of doing the course tasks (from survivor to expert). The grade from the course depends on the path the pupil chooses. However, the pupil could also deviate from the chosen path to get a higher grade.

The students could write the examination in different „Levels“. If they‘ve failed in one part of the examination, they are able to repeat more than one time. If they manage three levels, the students will have a better graduation than the students who manage one or two.

In my opinion the story is very important. Create good story and put there some tasks, situations which solutions are conncted with curriculum. Valuation of student's work should be done as often as possible. A teacher can valuate many things, from student's writing skills, oral expression, creativity to his motivation and his stance on the theme. Valuating can be numeric or descriptive, but it could be made more fun too. For example, we could establish a system of collecting points / stars with younger students. The final prize can be a grade, but also something symbolic, like a title, a badge, a crown or a simple gift. Instead of stars, we can use percentages with older students: it could be transformed into an animation via digital tools. A final grade, ways of valuating and valuating criteria should be transparent, apprehensible and logic.

First of all, I think the evaluation system has to change!
By the time you are asked to change the way you teach, you also need to change the way you rate it!

In my classes, to monitor and classify students, I use many grids to observe behaviors and skills that are then transformed into a scale of 1 to 5.
It is true that students are very competitive and demanding when observing their colleagues.
I could create grids where students do peer-to-peer ranking, create tags, score, lists of skills, associated with games, resorting to various tools ... it takes creativity!

I think that using Kahoot could be a great idea to gamifying the grading. With Kahoot students shouldn't feel so stressed!
I'm trying to use Edmodo- quizzes: my students do them at home and then we discuss in class about the results.
I would like also to try the badges, because I think students would feel happy to get one badge more (not thought like a "traditional grade").

From my point of view, and related to researches and theory of growth mindset (Carol Dweck) it is important to give feedback which recognize someone’s effort, not only the result. My students are adults aged 17 and over. They all feel uncomfortable and timid when they start thinking about evaluation. Therefore, besides the usual assessment of control work I use the self-assessment system for students.

For almost every lesson I create quiz by kahoot, quizizz or google forms that helps students to self-assess. I simply started with giving points for all activities done during a module and marking at the end of the module based on the ration between the points attempted / available and the points collected. Until this year there was a good online tool to present the points and show Ss progress. (Teacher could give the beginning and end date, the points to collect for the marks (mapping), list the tasks and record the points for each student. Ss could see how they climb higher and higher.) We lost this due to financial reasons but there is an e-leaning framework now where Ss can build their towns as they are getting points. I use a strategy my students (6/7 years) love it. We have 4 tables of different colours in our classroom, students have their own place at the table and so the table becomes a team. We have 4 circles of the same colours of the tables in the blackboard. Every time the table acts properly (kids are concentrated, motivated and participating) we add colour at the circle but everytime kids act unproperly we delete colour. First, the evaluation system would have to change. When talking about differentiation in the form of evaluation, since students learn all differently, common assessment sheets, benchmarking tests and national tests (at some levels of education) do not make sense. Portuguese teachers are governed by a quantity of grids that will, in the end, assign a level to a student, these grids, which for me make little or no sense. If the teachers try to evaluate differently (without it being difficult for parents) to go to school to complain about this same teacher. I've already had a complaint in the direction of trying to teach math with games. In my class every kid has a tree on the wall...they receive 5 leafes for behavior and they have to keep them in the tree in order to have acces to a number of outgoing activities . The pupils can receive more leaves for extra work (more problems well solved, projects, etc). A prize is offered for a set of 10 leaves so they are excited and hard working kids.

Levels instead of grades, like in real games. And within those levels certain categories with percentage that would be turned into grades: agility, speed... This is a quite interesting issue, even if it pose some problems with administrative commitments that we as teacher have to respect due italian law.
Above all we could introduce some badge-stickers with encouraging names (e.g. Level 1 "novice", Level 2 "apprentice"; Level 3 "good man!, level 4 and so on). There should be many badges, not only connected to disciplines, so also the students that are weak can obtain some badges (maybe connected to social skills?). The level requirements to obtain a badge should be clear and known to every students, so every one could auto-evaluate its learning and behaviour.
All this should be made also thtough ICT tools. But we should be careful to not create a too compehetive environment; whilst we should boost cooperation and collaboration.

Each semester learners would receive a list of tasks they could do throughout the semester. They can be organised in groups and each task brings points both for the learner and the group. If they bring book reports or any supplementary books or worksheets, they also gain points. In order not to burden the teacher too much, many of these tasks can be evaluated by peers. At the end of the semester, the winning group can choose an activity inside or outside school and the learner who gained most points receives a prize from the school or the teacher.

This is not an easy issue. I have used Kahoot, which students love, but it's not very reliable, because of the internet connection, and also because not all the students have a smartphone. I have also used google sites and google docs to create online tests on info that the students have to get from the site created by them (multinational group work). MadMagz is another collaborative tool that I love to use, and it allows me to assess the work done by the students, as they have to send the pages they create back to me. I like group work and peer assessment - it tends to create better results, and more responsible students in as much tasks depend on the participation of all the elements of the group. I would like to use rubrics more than I do, though.

I work with students with special needs (intellectual disabilities), so they have a problem to understand grading system, but they like to get an "A" grade (in Croatia we use numbers from 1 to 5, number 5 is best grade). I use badges in form of smiley (happy smiley if they for fill tasks and followed classroom rules; neutral smiley if they are so-so, and sad smiley if they not for fill tasks and doesn't follow classroom rules). They like it, because, they get smiley after each activity (immediately feedback, like prizes in usual games), and sometimes they even give smiles to each other and to themselves (they learn how to evaluate in a simple way themselves and each other). At the end of class, they can replace smiles with a small prize (candy, clip art, or similar).

As long as grades will exist, there will be a bias between intrinsic motivation and grade. If I use badges instead of grades, I asume that this is nothing else then grades. This is not the goal I have. To support intrinsic motivation I have to make sure that the students create their own projects and follow their own problem solving. Well, grading itself is based on giving points for a completed task which is also the fact for the games. But grading is traditionally considered stressful and obligatory so pupils don't like it (especialy when they get poor grades). I sometimes award the winner of the game we play with the best grade (which is 5 in Croatia) but I never give other marks, I don't want to spoil the game with a bad grade.
But, I quess we could use games for grading, we just need to find or create appropriate ones.

It would be great to assign points to each unit and every activity in that unit. The points are divided into levels. Students earn points doing homework, essays, collaborating with others in classroom and, of course, passing the tests. They all start at the zero level and try to level up (maximum is level 5). They can get extra assignments if they want to boost their score. Every two weeks we choose the winner (not the student with highest overall score, but the student with the most points earned in those two weeks) and he gets an award (some sort of advantage for the next assignment – like choosing the peers to work with…). All the students get their grade after the unit is over depending on their overall score.

I use to create board games in the classroom with two different levels. In that way, children can challenge and always be motivated. Adavanced students needs more vocabulary, and needs to demonstrate what have learnt. Since the beginning of my career as a teacher, I have always had the habit of sharing the parameters for their evaluation, the criteria and the value of each criterion with the students, also in writing.
At the end of each oral or written examination the students have always understood the meaning of the vote taken, linked to the performance and not to their person.
I thought of gamifying this phase, creating a game with the boys.
Having a pc and the lim, we have created an excel sheet, which we would like to become a real platform, with space for the list of students and all the evaluation items (content, exposure, language properties, completeness of the message and competence ). For each item a range of values indicated with a precise number of points.
The evaluation from 1 to 5 points, corresponds to the grades from 6 to 10, therefore no insufficient.
And above all the pupils also average the points and then the votes, identifying in which parameter each of them can and must improve.
