"No matter how radiant the colors, how enchanting the melody, how gorgeous and splendid the pageant...to human thought and inquiry he is broader than all visible worlds, loftier than all heights and deeper than all depths" (p. 1-2)

This is an incredible envisioning coming from a man born into the slavery system, I'm not sure how one can justify Douglass' view upon humanities with such sacred and highly esteemed values after experiencing one of the most inhumane, brutal violence in the history of this country. This quote speaks of his personhood - holistically and unconditionally loving on the humanities, whether black or white, man or woman, old or young. A person is worthy and deserving of the love loftier than all heights and deeper than all depths, just because one exists. Douglass is clear on delivering the fact that we all should honor the differences - whether racially defined or not - no human value can comprise of anything more vulnerable than the breath of life itself.

Jayden Maloney - "As the gold in the mountain is concealed in huge and flinty rocks, so the most valuable ideas and inventions are often enveloped in doubt and uncertainty." (p. 17)

Knowing the background of Frederick Douglass and how much he grew from it, it makes sense that he would say that the best ideas come from within but can be shadowed by negative things like uncertainty or fear. A person's "true colors" really comes from within, their heart and their brain explain their actions and ideals. We are all vulnerable in the sense that showing those colors, showing that part of you from the inside, can be scary and fear-inducing. The best things that can come from mankind first came from doubt and fear, from doing things over and over, from trial and error. Not knowing if something will go well but going through it anyway is embracing that vulnerability to get to success. In order to shine and get through hardships, uncertainty, fear, vulnerability, are all things that a person goes through to grow from previous things and prepare for the future.

"Mrs. Stowe would be nothing among the grizzly bears of the Rocky Mountains. We should not be likely to ask for her help at a barn raising, or a ship launch, but when a great national evil was to be removed; when a nation's heart was to be touched; when a whole country was to be redeemed and regenerated and millions of slaves converted into free men, the civilized world knew no earthly power equal to hers." (p. 19)

There are things that we just aren't good at and that's vulnerability in a sense. When you aren't skilled at or able to do something, you are vulnerable when something similar comes up. Just because you're vulnerable, because you aren't able to do something at all or proficiently, doesn't mean you're vulnerable in everything. You have strong suits in different things and your vulnerability can actually enhance and strengthen you to do other things in better ways. Like in the quote, it says "Mrs. Stowe would be nothing among the grizzly bears of the Rocky Mountains." That is her vulnerability. She physically would be nothing against a bear or to help with physical things. She would be of no use to the people and things involved with those. She's strong in her writing, in touching a nation's heart. She could change lives in ways that are different to other people. I believe that having vulnerability, not being good at certain things, allows you to excel in other things and to be powerful in doing so.

Many people come from difficult backgrounds but this quote shows that these backgrounds are not setbacks, its an opportunity to fight for you to succeed.

"Banneker came upon the scene and materially assisted in lifting his race to a higher consideration than that in which it has been previously held." pg.24

In history, black men were seen as property, not important, little, etc. They were taken advantage of for labor, were treated cruelly, and were isolated when it came to society as a whole. This quote states that he helped society see them as humans and not property and that they can succeed and become great if they had the opportunity to.

Quote 1
This quote beautifully describes self-dependence and relying on oneself. By stating, "...A head will fall more heavily when the help is withdrawn", Douglas is saying that giving someone help serves no purpose if the person is to fall back again after the help is withdrawn as if they were never helped. It shows the lack of self-reliance/ independence, which he regarded as having " no wisdom"
Quote 2
The quote covers a different aspect of the previous quote on self-dependence. The strength to rely on oneself and stay consistent comes from a mental/ spiritual strength that is built up over time. This attribute comes from a certain amount of people and takes a lot of people to be gained from the ground up.

"Opportunity is important but exertion is indispensable." Douglass emphasizes the significance of hard work as an imperative means to accomplish success. It's not a stroke of luck that makes a man self-made, but tolerable physical and mental effort.

"There is a tide in the affairs of men which, taken at its flood, leads on to fortune" This quote is metaphorical.

"Indolence and failure can give a thousand excuses for themselves." The reason this quote stands out to me is because it doesn't matter what the excuse was but what the result was. It takes accountability to be a "Self-Made Man", but indolence and failure seems to be two of the biggest thing holding some of us back, with the causation of indolence usually being ourselves.
