--This is the least severe burn. This is a burn that only affects the first layer of skin. The skin is usually red or discolored, but it will heal within a few days without scarring.
--A common first degree burn is sunburn. Cool the area with cool water. A sunburn may be helped by the use of an aloe vera gel.

--This is a painful burn that effects the top two layers of skin. The skin is usually blotchy and blisters form. Swelling isn't unusual. Healing can take three to four weeks.
--A common second degree burn may be caused by exposure to fire. Cool the area with large amounts of cool water. NEVER use ice. Use a dry and sterile dressing to cover the burn. You may need medical help.
