A half gallon of milk, a loaf of bread, a dozen eggs, two cans of jack mackerel, a small bag of apples, and some popcorn.” “He simply waited for me to fork over the cash, as if he knew I didn’t have it in me to say no” pg 209. This just goes to show how when they were poor and needed to have food for themselves, their father would rather spend it on himself for harm.

When Jeannette Walls was going to New York, you would expect her mother to be supportive, happy for her, and miss her, but it wasn't in this case. Her mother was jealous of her daughter. She saw it as unfair and how she's stuck. “I’m not upset because I’ll miss you,” Mom said. “I’m upset because you get to go to New York, and I’m stuck here. It’s not fair” pg 237. Her mother cared more about her leaving and it not being fair than taking care of her daughter. She only cared when it came to herself. These problems were common in Jeannette's life, and she learned to deal with them. She learned to accept that her mother is the way she is and jealous as it gets.

Jeannette Walls never had anyone looking out for her. She learned to cook on her own and take care of herself. She learned to be independent. As if she never had parents to begin with. It was all normal for her. It was normal to do things out of the ordinary, like cooking for yourself as a child, when, in reality, your parents should be doing that for you. She had herself to rely on and nobody else. She overcame her hardships. Throughout the book, she shows how she refuses help from others. She found ways to make things for herself and to feed herself. "I was on fire. It's my earliest memory. I was three years old, and we lived in a trailer park in a southern Arizona town whose name I never knew." Pg 9.

Jeannette's father was an alcoholic and had an addiction to cigarettes. The addiction was terrible; he would always be itching for an argument or finding some way to get his hands on alcohol or cigarettes. He was always drunk. Rex Walls cared more about being drunk and himself rather than his family. He was just as selfish as the mom. When Jeannette and Lori went to New York, her parents also came as well later on in the book. At one point, they needed a place to stay, so they would go. It became one month, then two, then three and four. It was Lori's father that was getting to her, though. He was always drunk. " He'd come home night drunk and gunning for an argument." Brian noticed Lori's behavior, so he offered that Rex stay with him but with rules of no drinking. "Brian saw that Lori was on the verge of snapping, so he invited Dad to come live with him." Pg 254. and "He said he'd allow dad to stay, but dad had to follow some rules, the first being that he stop drinking as long as he was there." Pg 254.

Jeannette Walls had two sisters, Lori and Maureen, and one brother, Brian. Jeannette was closer with Lori and Brian than with Maureen. Maureen had issues which wasn't her fault. When Jeannette and Lori were planning to leave for New York, they were saving money. One day, they found out their father took the money they had saved up. " You Bastard!" Lori Shouted. "You stole our money!" Pg 228. That isn't something a normal parent would do. Had no respect towards the daughters and only decided to use it for himself. The Sanders family was going to Iowa and offered Jeannette that if she came along to help watch her kids, she'd be paid 200 dollars by the end of summer and a ticket back to welch. Instead of taking the offer, she gave it to her sister. When they were ready to pick Lori up, she gave everyone a hug except her father. "This family is falling apart," he said. "It sure is," I told him. Pg 230.
