  • New phishing attack methods are developed all the time. Therefore, keep yourself informed about the latest ones. 
  • Do not click on a link in an email or instant message unless you are sure that it is genuine.
  • Download an anti-phishing toolbar that will alert you every time you are about to enter a known phishing site. 
  • Keep your browser up-to-date and check your online accounts regularly for traces of phishing attempts.
  • Use high-quality firewalls as a shield between you, your computer, and outside intruders to reduce the odds of phishing attempts. 
  • Be cautious of pop-up windows as they often redirect to malicious websites. Do not click on the "cancel" button, as those buttons often lead to phishing sites. Click the tiny 'x' in the upper corner of the browser instead.
  • Get into the habit of regularly changing your passwords to lock out potential attackers.
  • Do not share your personal information anywhere over the Internet. 
  • Train your employees to adopt the best anti-phishing practices.

According to the report by TOI, Priyadharshini came across an advertisement for a KFC franchise while surfing the internet.To get more details to start her own business, Priyadarshini contacted the mobile number in the advertisement. Her call was picked by a man who said that he holds a good position in the restaurant chain business and promised her to help her get the franchise."He then emailed her details with the KFC logo and asked her to transfer 1.5 lakh to his account, which she did on February 14, for processing work,' a police officer said as quoted by TOI.Later, the man demanded more money from the victim on the pretext of interior work at her franchise and area survey. Falling for his words, Priyadarshini transferred a total of Rs 14.09 lakh to four different bank accounts between February 14 and March 23. "She transferred 14.09 lakh to four different bank accounts of him between February 14 and March 23. He sent her an agreement letter and switched off his mobile phone on March 24," the officer said.After realising that she had been cheated, Priyadharshini filed a complaint with the city cybercrime police. A case was registered against the unidentified person under sections 420, 465, and 468 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 66 D of the Information Technology Act.Meanwhile, a gang involved in a similar crime with the same modus operandi was arrested by the Jharkhand police. The city cybercrime police have reached out to them to gather more information about the arrested gang members.While the investigation is ongoing, it is important to note that in this case the victim was tricked into transferring money to a fraudster who posed as a representative of a well-known fast food brand. The fraudster used a fake advertisement and false promises to convince the victim to transfer money for the purpose of obtaining a franchise.
