The play traces backwards, starting from the discovery of a corpse of a man named Jim in a hotel room by the seemingly cursed and talkative hotel maid Amy. Each successive scene explains the previous scene: it follows the story of Jim, and the corpse of a young woman whom Jim found himself in his storage warehouse, which drove him to suicide in the first place.

The play breathing corpses premiered in 2005 at the Royal Court Theatre in London.

After its initial premiere it has since been produced in Sydney 2006, The Hague 2007 and most recently Melbourne 2016. The British regional premiere was at Alma Tavern Theatre, Bristol 2007 presented by Plain Clothes Theatre Productions.

The drama Breathing Corpses does not deal with how the living deal with death. As the title suggests, it is less about the living and more about the half-dead because the characters had a close brush with a corpse and are plagued by death-related ideas. Can they manage? Unlike other people, they don't. They give way under the weight with unusual ease, causing many deaths in the process.

Amy also a cleaner and waitress, is the first to find a body in this play: that is a suicidal guest in one of the hotel rooms. Isla Cowan gives a powerful and heart-wrenching performance as she begins to talk to the mysterious dead body under the bed covers. As she reads his final words, she gradually begins to realise how his death may affect not only her career (this is not the first time she has found a dead body in a hotel room) but also her entire life, as well as the lives of his family and friends. By imagining the dead man’s past in an impressive and thought-provoking monologue, Cowan’s Amy learns that death is not only about those killed, but also about those that are left behind.

During my rehearsals, because It was a monologue rehearsal I had to do everything solo and even though I would've considered it challenging it was probably my favourite.

Working solo made me not rely on anyone else but myself and also the barriers I had to face was only me so I tried to avoid creating any barriers as much as I could.

Rehearsal times are always precious since its about preparing for the final performance and I tried to use my time wisely and rehearse as professionally as I can {like a true actress}

With the help of shenagh I was able to overcome any areas of my performance that still needed perfecting and also any help with characteristic skills.

shenagh told me to focus on my characters mood and who she was which in this case we tried to figure out who my character could possibly be.

At the end I figured out how to successfully work around with my character and try to put her in place whilst performing.
This gave me a lot of acting + characterising skills that was yet to be learnt for future plays.

During the week of me learning my monologue I had a successful time trying to adjust to my character and the way im supposed to use my emotions to adapt to my role.

my monologue in general had a lot of emotions to it which made me realise a couple of things.
I either have to tell the story in the paragraph I chose as my monologue or I will tell the story with the emotional background of the character.
whilst rehearsing in class I went over a lot of the back story behind my monologue and my character with my teacher Shenagh.
She ask me a bunch of questions on what I think the character 'Amy' is in the story and what could be going on.
I replied with what I thought I knew which was that Amy found a dead body that she probably committed by accident and now is trying to cover it up.
However, the more I had input from my other classmates and my teacher I learned more about the story and how Amy is a mid trying to cover up the fact that someone committed suicide in the hotel room.
the idea I got from Amy is that she is really delusional at this point in time and I didn't understand why she was acting very erratic but then when I went to do my research I found out that the constant suicides that she has had to handle in the hotel room has turned her insane.
I input amy's erratic behaviour in my emotions when speaking my lines.
Such as, the pauses in some of the sentences, I used it as an advantage to change my mood.
With this skill I was able to gain much more of an insight into what my character is actually like and to put more of a effort to tell the story to the people who will whiteness my monologue and to figure out what the story is without any confusion.

When the day of performing my monologue came, I was super excited and nervous to perform it because I wasn't sure if I would remember my lines.
When I started to perform my monologue I realised that it wasn't so bad at all and I actually felt more comfortable with the minimal amount of people watching me than a whole audience.
I performed my monologue with ease and also put a lot of the skills I practiced for this specific monologue without forgetting to add my emotions.

Even better if:

even though I thought that my monologue rehearsal and performance went quite well, there was moments during those times where I wish I could've done better.
Such as; Rehearsing my script more, adding more character into my role, not forgetting some of my lines.

when it came to rehearsing my script I had times where it would be so hard to be off script because I didn't go over my script outside of college.
This made the day of my monologue performance so much more full of anxiety because when that day did come I was outside of the room continuously practicing my lines so that I won't forget, I hate the feeling of having anxiety before a performance and i was unsure wether I would pass this piece with ease or not.
Adding character to my role as Amy is something I kept on rehearsing during class, I even did research about that specific part of the play so that I could input her characteristics into my acting.
The day of the performance comes and I try to add as much of Amy's erratic behaviour into my emotions as much as I could however, there was times where my acting would slip into more of my own characteristics and my aim for myself was to not act as myself at all and to act like I am Amy.
Forgetting lines is always a no go even though its seen as a one time moment or just that you are learning, it is never okay for the person performing to forget their lines. And during my monologue performance I had a moment where I forgot my lines.
Although, I was able to covert he mistake up quickly I remember giving It a long pause to quickly remember what I was supposed to say in that moment.

In conclusion, with all these mistakes that happened I do think I could've done better with putting effort into learning my lines outside of class, not only to make my performance better but to also drop the panic attack before the performance.

What could of been improved:
I believe my organisation and time effort could've been improved, even though I believe the outcome I got from this whole monologue project was quite positive I still think that if I gave enough time to organise myself with script learning and giving time outside of college to learn my lines, It would've saved the fright of having to perform.
I took this whole project lightly because I thought it wasn't much since it was just a monologue and not a big project like the other I did, but thinking of it now, it is a big project especially for me who in the future is going to base half of my life with on going monologue performances.
In the real acting world, it would be unacceptable to forget lines during the performance and also leaving script learning last minuet, therefore I put it as a target to never leave any of my script learning last minute especially if there is a role to be learned and soaked in throughout the whole character + line learning stage.

The reason I chose to do Amy from breathing corpses as a monologue is because when I first saw the monologue and I read through it, the more the plot interested me with its mysterious setting/genre.
The way that little part of the monologue had so much story to it interested me not only as a performer but also as a reader, In that moment I knew that I had to perform it and show it in my own way.
during rehearsals the more I started to rehearse the script the more the whole monologue started to come out with more plot twists. At this point in time, there was many times where I went over the script with my teacher during rehearsals and she tried to question me on what I think the story is about and who I think my character is in that story, I had many thoughts on the story but when I started to practice the monologue I realised theres much more back story to it than a Amy (a maid) who just found a dead body.

The mysterious genre of this monologue interested me at first but it was especially fun trying to crack the code in order to actually understand what the story is about.
Even when I first did my research about this part of the monologue I realised how what I thought I knew about the story seemed to be false and there was much more of a twist to the story than I expected there to be.

In the end the whole reason why this monologue interested me was because of the emotions required for the character i'm supposed to play as.
This monologue had so much different emotions that it made me excited to learn about all the different ways I could use my acting skills from previous projects in order to input it into my character as Amy.
