Connected, but alone? by Sherry Turkle

The talk of Sherry Turkle focuses on the reality of how technology became so powerful that it really became so strong in influencing us, not just in our decisions in life but also on how we live our lives. She pointed out how we became so excited on technology because it helped us in connecting with our loved ones just as she stated that getting a text from her daughter was like getting a hug. We have seen the best part of living in the virtual world. It might be because we really want to use what we learned in the virtual world about ourselves, about our identity, and to live better lives in the real world but it actually dragged us into a place that we don’t want to go.
We can’t change the fact that technology is always been part of us in this generation where we can’t live our lives easier without technology. Every single thing we see or use now were digitalized and we needed their aid in everything we do. In just a snap we are now living in world where if we don’t conform to it, we will be left out. It actually became so beneficial but little by little, it is changing who we are as person and as a society. It brought us innovation but how about us?
I really agree on her point that those little devices on our pockets are so pychologically powerful that they don't only change what we do but they change who we are. It's true that it helped us in connecting with those people we are not with but once we indulge ourselves in it, we become too focused and we enter a new world of isolation. A place where we never wanted to be distracted and where our connection with other people stop, creating barriers around us.
It makes me feel sad that instead of communicating and being present with one another, we prefer to use our phone. We prefer texting rather than talking to one another. The more we focus on our phones, the more we isolate ourselves making us even lonelier.
Her talk lead me to a self reflection that technology helped us but it actually ruined our communication. Before it's too late, we have to control our way of using those devices. That would make us appreciate the presence of the people around us.
