Hello!
My name is Elizabeth Chetcuti. I am a teacher at De La Salle College Malta. I currently teach English to Year 5 students.
I have been a teacher for 19 years. I spent six of these years working as a teacher in state schools in Atlanta Georgia. My work experience in Malta and abroad has allowed me to become familiar with various teaching styles and methods, all of which have enriched my outlook on teaching and learning.

I am a Subject Teacher, therefore I go from one class to another to give lessons. Typically I have 25 students in each class. Most of the children are fluent in the English Language. There is a reading corner in each classroom. The desks can be moved around easily so that the children can engage in partner work and group work.

Currently we have a Starboard installed in the classroom. I have my laptop which is usually connected to the Starboard during lessons. I allow students to use my laptop to write sentences on the Starboard or any other activities which require a keyboard. Next year the children will have their own tablet. The children have weekly lessons with the I.C.T. teacher in the computer lab. I am looking forward to starting this adventure!

The magic of QR codes in the classroom - Karen Mensing

https://youtu.be/NRgWRXFXLQs?t=7

What I really liked about this video is that the speaker, Karen Mensing, gave practical examples of how she herself has used QR codes in the classroom. I can imagine student's reactions and enthusiasm when carrying out the activities she named in the video. The children were actively involved in looking up information and answers. In this way, the children were owning what they were learning. They were not just passively receiving information. I think that the speaker came across as a very confident teacher and she was well informed about this topic. I am glad that I am following this course as it's allowing me to become familiar with electronic tools that are available online. I feel that the more I learn about the tools then I will become more confident and will not be afraid to implement new and innovative ideas to my teaching.

https://youtu.be/ojiebVw8O0g

I found the literature on Flipped Classrooms very interesting and I am beginning to feel more confident that I will be able to implement these ideas once my students start using the tablet next year. The children will have the opportunity to look for information rather than rely solely on me to give them information. Children will be given the opportunity to work at their own pace and the teacher can assign appropriate activities which will help target students' weaknesses. I think that open ended questions will encourage students to give their opinion about a topic and they will learn to make connections with other things they would have learned through research..

The students can participate without feeling discouraged or shy that they are going to make mistakes. I can ask the children to write their opinions about any given topics. We can make lists of books the children have read and they could write reasons why they liked the book and why they would recommend this book to a friend. I can also use this tool so that the children can view posts at home and they too will contribute to a conversation or homework I will assign.
