Mexico believed this annexation was the beginning to a war. Despite this Mexico still claimed Texas as its own land. Adding on to this headache there was a dispute between Mexican and American boarders. Texas had claimed the Rio Grande river as the boarder, but Mexico claimed the Nueces river as the boarder between them. The rivers had at least a 100 mile difference.Mexico wanted to fight to prove their claim however the Americans didn't get that. John Slidell, a Spanish speaking man was sent by President James Polk to Mexico, to offer the Mexicans $25 million for California, Texas, and New Mexico, this failed. On April 25, 1846 troops were sent to the Rio Grande and a Mexican Calvary unit killed 16 Americans. This event would start, "The War with Mexico". My husband has gone to fight in war, along with my brother. My job is to stay behind and protect the children. But why must we have war? What if my husband doesn't come back? How will I tell my children? America should just stay in their place and let us keep our land. Why must they fell the need to send someone over here to bargain with us and due to us denying, feel the need to send troops. Where will I take my children, how will we restart our lives at this point? Hard enough my husband may never come back from war. When will my husband come back from war? If he comes back will he be injured? Us Northerners have opposed having Texas admitted to the U.S. and not only have the South added another slave state to unbalance the amount of representation, but they have started a war and invaded the lands of others. If America will only engage in wars then how are we representing Unification? Why should we continue to put ourselves in these positions? The Southerners are bringing chaos to this Country. What sense does it make to forcefully send troops to an area but claim that we were ambushed by them?
