From the Greek word meaning overseer. As the direct successors of the Apostles, the bishops of the Church each possess the fullness of the Sacrament of Holy Orders  or they have received the full authority that Christ gave to the Twelve. Only those who have been validly ordained as bishops are able to confer the Sacrament of Holy Orders. The individual bishops are the visible source and foundation of unity in their own particular churches. Each bishop is entrusted with a particular church that is a specific diocese in which he acts as Christ's chosen representative and the legitimate pastor of all the faithful within that diocese. The bishops are also often organized into a bishops conference which schedule regular meetings at which they dicuss and adopt pastoral policies , issue statements on moral and social issues of concern, and both implement and make recommendations on practices and policies for the Church in their particular country.
