How does one measure the success of a text? Success is often measured by the text's impact on the reader. We often prefer our films to end happily for our characters, but sometimes such endings ring false. In many cases, a more satisfying ending is one where we are left feeling the full emotional impact of dreams unrealised and conflicts unresolved. Such is the case with Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan.

Nina enters her changing room after her performance as the white swan. She finds Lily at her mirror, dressed in black, but when Lily turns to face Nina, we see she has become an image of Nina. The Black and White Swan confront one another. In this shot, an over-the-shoulder shot, we see Nina dressed in her white swan costume in the foreground with black swan Nina facing her.

This confrontation sees Nina grappling with which side of her personality will win out. When Black Swan Nina asks, "how about I dance the black swan for you?" Nina's fear of being replaced overwhelms her. In this instance it is not the fear of being replaced by another person, but her fear of losing her innocence and what will come next.

In this shot we see the two sides of Nina struggling to take control of the performance. We can analyse this shot in psychoanalytical terms by positing that Nina's Id (the black swan) and her superego (the white swan) are trying to gain control of Nina's Ego (her performance). It could also be examined through an archetypal lens, where we discuss the tropes of good and evil and light and dark, to examine how these play out in a tragic setting.

A ballerina dressed in all white is alone in the dark and lit up by a spotlight coming from the top left. She then dances an elegant dance while the camera spins around her, and focuses on her footwork. Then the music changes, with the camera and male dancer dressed fully in black approach her from behind, while deep breathing occurs (assault type sounds). This man in black dominates and takes control of her. The dance then finishes, and Nina is left alone again, frightened, as she fades away from the camera.

With the struggle between the two Ninas, we see clearly that the object of Aronofsky's interest is Nina's internal struggles. Her relationships with other characters are secondary. Challenges posed by Lily, Thomas and her mother are less important than the central challenge - the need to conquer herself.
