Foreshadowing: "Bobby Martin had already stuffed his pockets full of stones, and the other boys soon
followed his example, selecting the smoothest and roundest stones" (Jackson 1). Jackson describes the stones in detail to show their later significance. The collection of stones hints at the stoning of Tessie that occurs at the end of the story.

Suspense: “A sudden hush fell on the crowd as Mr. Summers cleared his throat and looked at the list. ‘All ready?’ he called. ‘Now, I'll read the names--heads of families first--and the men come up and take a paper out of the box. Keep the paper folded in your hand without looking at it until everyone has had a turn. Everything clear?’” Mr. Summers is going to read names and have people pick from the box. This incorporates suspense because the reader still does not know what the lottery is about and people are going up to determine if they are going to win or lose.

Foreshadowing. “She tapped Mrs. Delacroix on the arm as a farewell and began to make her

way through the crowd” (Jackson 3). Mrs Hutchinson is saying her goodbyes to people. So, the author is hinting at the chance of her not being able to see people again. Which means something bad might happen.

The box being locked up makes it feel important and gives the impression that people may try to tamper with its contents before the lottery. The description of what Mr. Summers had to do to prepare for the Lottery also feels like since there is a lot of work to be done, it raises the importance of the Lottery.

They showed that the crowd was very suspenseful as they were hoping that each and every single one of their families was not chosen for the "lottery".
