Which other town was destroyed by the eruption? In addition to Pompeii, the towns of Herculaneum and Stabiae along with the villas at Oplontis and Boscoreale were destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius. There is an awesome site with information on all the areas affected by Vesuvius located here: https://sites.google.com/site/ad79eruption/home.
This site has great detail of all of the areas affected by the eruption, what has been uncovered to date, and the known history of the area for what has been discovered. It is well worth taking a look at.

In 1594, Pompeii was rediscovered by accident when they were building an aqueduct. Excavations have been going on for 100's of years. The ash preserved the city.

Pliny the elder was a commander of the Roman Navy. He tried to rescue people from the ocean. The gasses killed him. Pliny the younger described what happened in writings but his writing were so bizarre that they were not believed. Recent years, science has vindicated his writings and now the phrase "Plinian eruptions" is used to describe erupting volcano's.

Pompeii remained until 1748, when explorers looking for ancient artifacts arrived in Campania and begun to dig. They found that the ashes had acted as a really good preservative: Underneath all that dust, Pompeii was almost exactly as it had been 2,000 years before, Its buildings were intact. Skeletons were frozen where they had fallen. Everyday objects and household stuff littered the streets. Later archaeologists even uncovered jars of preserved fruit and loaves of bread! Pretty cool :)
